  • Video Surveillance / CCTV Tutorials

    Hi Everyone,

I have put together a directory of video surveillance/cctv tutorials. Currently, there are 30 tutorials, about half I wrote myself and the other half are articles from across the web that I think offer particularly good content.

If you have any suggestions articles, essays or tutorials that you think should be included in this directory, please let me know.

My goal is to make it easier for people to learn about video surveillance / cctv by simplifying locating high quality relevant content.

    Best,

    John

Very cool. I'm going to email this link to my collegues.

This is a valuable resource. Thank you.

"Expert" is something like "leader". It's not a title that you can ever claim for yourself no matter what you might know or might have done. It's a title that others bestow on you based on their assessment of what you know and what you have done.

                      Parking Lot surveillance

I am looking for anyone who can tell me about their experience using Smart cameras in commuter parking lots to reduce thefts of and from vehicles. I also intend on posting crime prevention signage, random contract security patrols and handing out crime prevention flyers to commuters as they enter the lot. Any advice would be appreciated.

When you say "smart cameras", what exactly do you mean? Are you talking about a full-fledge video analytics system? Are you talking about simple motion detection in a camera? Be realistic if you're looking at analytics. Evaluate and cross-evaluate claims that any camera system reseller makes about cameras stopping thieves.

My next instinct for saying anything here is that no camera is going to reach out and grab your perps. What you can hope for is that you get very good evidence of the perp driving away in a car and that you get high quality imaging of perp in vehicle and the license plate.

As you noted, signage and security patrols can definitely cut down the number of would-be thieves you will have roaming your parking lots. Cameras can be set up to get you the evidence when signage and security officers aren't effective or aren't around.

One tip, constrict/choke the exit down to one (or maybe two) point(s); that makes it cheaper for cameras because you are limiting the numbers of locations where you would need surveillance.

John H (one of our members) wrote a nice quick article that covers the basics of video surveillance. Take about 2 minutes and read through it here: http://www.securityinfowatch.com/onl...on/18453SIW306

As you get more specific, I'm sure our technical and end-user base will weigh in on this issue. Good luck solving your security problem.
