Call Offs (or why I should not be such a Push Over)

I am just finishing up a 17.25 hour shift, and I hope that posting this will take up enough time for the cleaning crew to get out. Man I really hate S/S that will let guards take off for any reason, and then expect... oh wait

I'm in the same boat. I work for a Warm Body Security company which will allow anyone to call off at anytime with any/no reason needed. I've worked for SOs who called off because they were getting tatoos, didn't want to work due to weather (it's too hot/cold) and who had been up all night partying and were too hung over to work. While I appreciate the overtime I have very little respect for those slackers.

I remember reading the story about you covering for the girl who called off to get a tatoo. That is ridiculous.

One would think that if these people didn't have anything better to do than call in from work because they wanted to get a tatoo, they're hung over.....etc...Then maybe they shouldn't have jobs there in the first place

I've personally seen that happen several times (too hung over). The overtime is great to have for a while, but it does start to wear on you after so long of doing it!

The overtime does not do me any good. After my last raise I am right on the border between two (2) tax brackets. As a result I never see any profit when I work overtime. A couple months ago I picked up some holiday overtime. After taxes were taken from twelve (12) hours of actual overtime and the twelve (12) hours of holiday pay... I came away with fifty ($50) whole dollars above what I usually make. And I spent most of that on gas driving two the site, and using my personal vehicle for optional mobile patrols and heat (it was cold, and we did not have a gate house.

I once worked for the government - Trifectas or 3 days off (horse races where you get all 3 horses in order is a Trifecta) was common as the 3 day weekends were easy to swing. Many would take days off to allow others higher duty pay to clear debts or return favours. Nobody every bothered to reprimand them as all you got was a slap on the wrist. We all got 18 days sick leave per year and when I left I had 6 months leave I was paid out for.

1 girl I went for the same job had a Trifecta every 2 weeks together with a day off by accumulated hours worked and when we went for the same job with her 12 months of S/Leave absence she got the job over me. I was furious as this was not fair on those who were equally qualified and the sick leave was never taken into consideration. 3 weeks later I accepted another more senior role so it was a blessing in disguise for me.

As casuals, knocking back too many shifts as relief and you got tossed to the bottom of the pile for future work. I did not mind the call ins as I lived on a few minutes from 3 sites, but it made me angry to see the casuals supporting the company when the full timers were the ones who were given all the weekend and premium shifts with the penalties.

I can understand a shift worker taking a day off every year or two because they wanted to enjoy themselves a little longer the night before. They should plan ahead of course to have the shift covered, but time off for tattoos....

Well, I no longer feel like such a push over. The guard's medical condition was not quite so minor as she let on. She will be having surgery this coming Monday. I should have known better, she has never been the irresponsible type.

Anyone knows they aren't going to be able to make should call in as soon as they know. I hate it when I'm an hour from the end of my shift, dead tired, pass on more coffee because I want to go home and sleep and I get the call from dispatch "need you stay late". Or I'm sick and think "just a little bit more and i can go home and puke" and you get the call.

Now the company needs to know what you work already too. I get a call "can you work saturday" ummm, I already work saturday "oh, thats right, nevermind".

Ever been called, at work, by another site wanting to know why you have not shown up to relieve them? I have. I hate being double booked.
