  • Federal Law Enforcement

Canada has CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) that gathers information on criminal activity in Canada & the RCMP, our Boarder Guards & Coast Guard. These are our only federal law enforcement type agencies that I can think of.

    In the US you have

    FBI
    ATF
    Secret Service/Treasury
    Federal Marshalls
    Postal Inspectors
    Park Rangers

    What else?
I enforce rules and regulations, not laws.

So of these agencies have "police within police" like the FBI Police and The Secret Service's uniformed division, which used to be the "White House Police".

Is the US Coast Guard not military unlike Canada's which is a part of Transport Canada?

we also have Miliary Police but each branch does not have it's own. Eg no Navy Police or Army Police etc.

The Coast guard is Military (one of the 7 Uniformed Services), but in peace time it's part of Homeland security. and Coast guard NCOs also have some LE powers.

And the DoA/DoN/pentagon police and such are NOT military police, they are civilian police agencies of the Department of Defense. They exist to do some things the military police can't legally do (and they are easier to hire).

Are Park Rangers in Canada Law Enforcement? I thought they had to have an RCMP Officer with them to make arrests. And the Railway Police get their powers from the federal act but are not federal employees, they work for the railways.

Most of your "Police" in the federal government are either Federal Protective Service, or agency police. They are basically combined protective services, much like Black Cesar's role, providing law enforcement and physical security services to the member agency.

VA had security, then they got police. The VA Police are security forces.
FBI, NSA, CIA police are the same way, security forces that provide law enforcement and security services to their agency's property.

Postal Inspectors uniformed division, US Marshal's Service uniformed division, both perform the same role.

When you're the federal government, you can make anyone a cop, and it makes sense logistically to give them police powers.
