Cover and concealment are two different things.
Cover is relative to the weapon being used on you. A tank is good cover for a pistol round, NOT for an anti-tank round. When taking cover you have to bring this reality in to prospective. In order for it to be cover it must be able to stop the round or it is only concealment. Darkness is concealment but in no way is it cover. Things like home walls and doors are ONLY concealment you can be SHOT threw them. About the only part of a car that provides good cover is the engine. If the attack is coming from the side get by the front wheel opposite from it. If it is coming from the front or back get at the opposite end of the car. When using cover stay at least an arm length back from it. This will allow you room to manipulate your gun for clearing malfunction, mag changes, ECT. You need to learn what your gun will and will not shoot threw. There may come a time when you need to shoot threw something to shoot an IDENTIFIED threat. Understanding what you can shoot threw will give you the tactical advantage. It will also keep you from getting a false sense of security hiding behind concealment. But if concealment is all you have use it with any hope your enemy will not know it can be shot threw. Remember cover stops you from being shot concealment stops you from being seen. Hope this generates some thoughts and maybe some different views.
