"It's a sad way to start the year. What are we 15 hours, 17 hours into the new year and we have our first person that's killed in El Paso? that's definitely not the way we want to start 2008" said Chris Mears, El Paso Police Department.
It was just after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, when police say a security guard working at the toll booth at the Paso del Norte International Bridge was attacked. An attack that lead to El Paso's first murder. "When the officers got here, they learned that he was unconscious, and was receiving first aid, he was transported to Thomson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead" said Mears.
Police say the suspect, a Hispanic man, was crossing southbound on the bridge by foot. He attacked the privately contracted security guard at the pedestrian point, and fled the scene northbound.
Border patrol agents nearby were able to detain the suspect who was then placed in police custody. "We have a great cooperation and fortunately that lead to detaining the person that may ultimately be charged in this crime" said Mears.
Police say they are interviewing several witnesses who were at the crossing when the attack took place. They are asking that anyone who was driving over and who may have further details, contact them. You're asked to call crimes against persons at 564-7010
