Armored Truck Driver Shot At River Oaks Mall
Man Suffered Minor Injury To Hand; Gunman Remains At Large
CALUMET CITY, Ill. (CBS) ― Christmas Eve shoppers went on with their errands at Calumet City's River Oaks Shopping Center. Many had no idea there had been a shooting inside the JCPenny store Monday morning.

Calumet City Police say a man armed with a handgun shot a security officer who was working out of a Dunbar Armored Car, and entered the JCPenny store to retrieve cash.

Detectives say a gunman in a long dark trench coat shot the guard in the hand while the two were inside and elevator, then fled. WBBM Newsradio 780 reports that a co-worker said he was not seriously injured because he was wearing a bulletproof vest. No employees or customers at the store were hurt.

Police are still looking for the gunman. It was not immediately known if the gunman was able to get away with any money. A description was not available.

Police say the 911 call went out at 11:45 a.m. People who were in the mall at the time say they had no idea anything was wrong, until a woman who had witnessed the shooting told them there had been a shooting.

"She was just shook up and she said there had been a shooting and he had taken off and got away with it," said shopper Joshua Jones.

While witnesses alerted some shoppers to the shooting, others saw the emergency vehicles driving the wrong way down the street.

People pulled over trying to figure out what's going on," said shopper Michael Wortham. "Helicopters in the air, it's very unfortunate. I think people have no regard for human life."

"There had just been a shooting," Jones recalled. "The mall was so calm, we could not believe that something had happened. It was so calm."

River Oaks Center has seen gun violence in the recent past. In August 2006, an armored car employee was shot during a robbery attempt and in July of this year, two people were shot in the mall parking lot.

Still with Christmas just hours away, people were not afraid to walk into the stores, which remained open during and after the shooting.

The guard is in stable condition at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields. Detectives are talking to him right now.

all that matters is how we saved that one life that one time by being in the right place at the right time....

That mall sounds like a dangerous place to work. I wonder what their security set up is like.
