Police chased a suspect, who was carrying a handgun, into the Brampton Court apartment complex in the 4300 block of Northwest 19th Street following the 3:50 p.m. hold-up at a nearby Bankatlantic on N. State Road 7, officials said.

The security guard was wounded outside of the building, witnesses said, and was in serious condition at Broward General Medical Center, where he is being treated for two gun shot wounds to his upper torso, police said.

They did not immediately release the name of the security guard but said that he is 51 years old.

The suspect, police believe, appears to be in his 20s. Police say he fired on police officers from a stairwell in one of the apartment buildings. Soon after, police found a man dead from a gunshot would near where the gunman was firing from, but investigators are still trying to confirm that the dead man is the suspect they were chasing.

Police did not fire a single shot at the gunman, but investigators have not determined how the man was shot, according to Lt. Rick Rocco, Lauderhill police spokesman.
