A security guard at the Carl B. Stokes U.S. Courthouse was assaulted in the building's lobby Tuesday afternoon by man who became unruly after the guard searched his bike and found a gun, said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott.

The guard, whom Elliott did not identify, was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center with a cut to his face.

Donnell Hamilton, 32, of Cleveland, was arrested after other security guards subdued him, Elliott said. He is on probation for a weapons offense and now faces possible assault charges.

The confrontation happened after Hamilton brought his bike into the building's rotunda and aroused the guard's suspicion, Elliott said. The guard searched a pouch attached to the bike and found a .380-caliber handgun with five rounds inside. Hamilton then punched the guard.

Hamilton was at the courthouse for an appointment with his probation officer, Elliott said.

There's another one that will go down for awhile. You would think a guy would not be stupid enough to bring a gun into a government building. Then punch the guard. What an idiot.

Bigdog, unless they changed the rules this morning they are Court Security Officers and are appointed Special Deputy US Marshals while they are on duty and it doesn't matter the location in a Federal Courthouse or any place so designated by the Court or US Marshal.
        Enjoy the day,

"Security Guard" can mean anyone who is a government worker, regardless of their powers, to the media. If it doesn't say POLICE 20 places on their uniform, they're a guard.

When I worked the door at the Earle Campbell Federal Building here in Dallas I was a Guard, on the FPS/GSA contract. The contract Court Security Officers on the USMS contract were up stairs. I figure this was a similar thing.
