A security guard at the Carl B. Stokes U.S. Courthouse was assaulted in the building's lobby Tuesday afternoon by man who became unruly after the guard searched his bike and found a gun, said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott.
The guard, whom Elliott did not identify, was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center with a cut to his face.
Donnell Hamilton, 32, of Cleveland, was arrested after other security guards subdued him, Elliott said. He is on probation for a weapons offense and now faces possible assault charges.
The confrontation happened after Hamilton brought his bike into the building's rotunda and aroused the guard's suspicion, Elliott said. The guard searched a pouch attached to the bike and found a .380-caliber handgun with five rounds inside. Hamilton then punched the guard.
Hamilton was at the courthouse for an appointment with his probation officer, Elliott said.
