WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- A security guard was stabbed and seriously injured Thursday, inside the Southeast DC school building where she was working.

The security guard, who is employed by Hawk-1 Security, was assigned to be in the building and had been hired by the University of DC. UDC was using space in the school building for administrative purposes.

The attack happened at about 2 p.m. at the Ferebee Hope Elementary School building near
8th and Xenia Streets. No children were in the building at the time, as classes have not begun for DC public schools.

DC police officials tell 9NEWS NOW the woman was attacked by someone who knew her. They say she was stabbed some 16 times inside the hallway of the school building. Police say she suffered numerous injuries including two collapsed lungs.

The suspect is still on the loose. Police say they believe they know who was responsible in this attack and that information provided by witnesses will help them identify and apprehend the assailant.
