  • Security guard shot in Fort Pierce; 19-year-old sought

A 19-year-old man was being sought Sunday in connection with the shooting of a security guard outside a club on Delaware Avenue late Saturday.

The security guard, Maurice Burks, 26, was listed in critical condition Sunday at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Fort Pierce police responded at 11:58 p.m. Saturday to a report of a man shot outside of the club in the 1700 block of Delaware Avenue. When they arrived they found Burks had been shot multiple times.

Police said Sunday they were searching for a man they described as 5 feet, 3 inches tall, with a broken front tooth and wearing a checkered shirt and blue jeans.

According to Fort Pierce police, witnesses said the suspect shot Burks several times before fleeing from the scene.

Police said the shooting occurred after Burks heard glass breaking outside the night club, went outside to investigate and discovered the man breaking into a car.

Burks and another security guard, 32-year-old David Arnett, allegedly confronted the suspect and chased him through an adjacent parking lot before the shooting occurred. Arnett was not harmed, according to police.
