  • Armed security guard shot, killed in Newark

    Friday, July 20, 2007

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- An armed security officer making a delivery near University Hospital was shot in the head and killed Friday morning, authorities said.

The man was making a cash drop on West Market Street shortly after 9 a.m. when two men approached him to rob him, said Lupe Todd, a spokeswoman for the city of Newark.

The guard, whom police have not identified, reached for his gun but was shot first, Todd said.

He was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 10:02 a.m.

Police have not apprehended the suspects, Todd said.

He was making a cash drop at University Plaza, a strip mall with a dry cleaner, a nail salon and a dollar store.

Authorities said the man worked for Internal Intelligence. The private Newark-based security company provides uniformed security services to businesses ranging from housing complexes to research laboratories to armored cars and for surveillance, according to its Web site.

Police blocked off an area near the hospital and were searching a two-story apartment complex directly across from Society Hill, a neighborhood of new townhomes. Residents from Society Hill said they saw the apartment complex being evacuated.

At about 10:15 a.m., police emerged from the apartment complex with a man in handcuffs, but it was not immediately clear if he was a suspect in the shooting.

Friday's shooting is the 55th homicide in Newark this year.

Its not how we lived that counts....
all that matters is how we saved that one life that one time by being in the right place at the right time....
