SPRINGFIELD - A 49-year-old city man faces assault and theft charges after he tried to walk out of a Boston Road department store last night with an armload of clothing and a flat-screen television.

Charles W. Banks, 49, of 58 Avon Place, bit a security guard who tried to stop him on his way out of the Wal-Mart at 1105 Boston Road, according to police Lt. Harry Kastrinakis.

Banks attempted to make his getaway out of the store shortly after 10 p.m., Kastrinakis said.

Banks was carrying four shirts, socks, shorts and a 15-inch flat-screen television, walking straight past the cashiers' stations and towards the door, Kastrinakis said.

Kastrinakis said two security guards attempted to stop Banks, but he assaulted them, biting one of them.

Police were called and arrested Banks at 10:30 p.m.

He was charged with larceny over $250 and two counts of assault and battery, Kastrinakis said.

An ambulance was called to help the security guard who had been bitten. The guard was treated on the scene.

Banks was held overnight in the Police Department lockup and will be arraigned on the charges today in Springfield District Court.
