A West Valley Hospital patient stabbed a security guard in the face with a pen and fled in his underwear before being struck on Interstate 10, Goodyear police said.
Joe E. Phillips became agitated when hospital staff tried to administer treatment to him Friday evening. When a security guard approached, Phillips stabbed the guard just below an eye, police said.
Phillips escaped in his underwear and was later seen walking on I-10. A vehicle struck him, breaking his leg, and he was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.
Phillips is in fair condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
