Hospital Security Officer Denied Injury Benefits

I received this in a Healthcare Security Weekly, an eNewsletter I get every week. Unfortunately they don't give a link to the original story, but this plain just disturbed me.

Guard denied injury benefits after attack by inmate

Officials have denied a Cook County Correctional Officer's request for duty-related injury benefits after he was stabbed in the neck by an inmate at Stroger Hospital in Chicago.



Additionally, the hospital sent the 19-year officer a $3,750 medical bill for the emergency services he received the day of the stabbing, reported NBC-5 in Chicago.



The guard was stabbed by a convicted murderer who was being treated at the hospital for a skin disorder. The inmate pulled out a shank, wrestled the guard for his gun, and fled down the hall. He hijacked a shuttle bus before being stopped.



The guard lost blood from the stab wound, but never gave up his 9mm handgun and chased after the inmate until he helped to stop the escape attempt. Two months after the incident, the Cook County board told the guard he can't prove his injuries happened while he was on duty, the TV station reported.

I saw this too, and my reaction was that there's something here we're not being told. The conclusion of the board would be simply too fantastic to believe if there isn't something more going on here.

One of the problems the board would face in the "public discussion" about this case is that HIPAA and other laws would prevent them from telling their side of the story. So, I'm reserving judgment. I hope there's followup.

WTF ... Don't these people keep records of details outside the institution such as babysitting convicts in hospitals! The officer can have his medical records opened if he gives the Hospital the ok to release his records.

If this officer belongs to a union I would see about filing a lawsuit!
