PHOENIX -- A man just released from prison was recovering from a gunshot wound on Saturday after Phoenix police shot and wounded him in connection with shoplifting, stabbing and carjacking incidents Friday afternoon in and around a Fry's Electronics store near 28th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

Officers said the man, identified as Carl Cresong, 46, is accused of stabbing two security guards who tried to stop him from leaving the store.

"It looked like he weilded a knife and quickly cut the guy in some way," said Dave Nelson, a witness.

Nelson's son then took off after Cresong.

""My son is fairly athletic and so he was jumping over fences and trying to stay close," Nelson told CBS 5 News. "He didn't want to confront him, but he wanted to at least contain him. He didn't want to see him get away."

Police said Cresong then ran to a nearby Fazoli's where he carjacked a woman in a minivan at knifepoint.

Investigators said Cresong was cut off by a responding police cruiser and hit the vehicle. The officer received minor injuries.

The officer and Cresong exited their vehicles as additional officers arrived on the scene, police said.

"Two other officers that were also responding went to confront that suspect," said detective Stacie Derge. "He lunged at those officers with a knife and one of those officers shot the suspect."

Cresong was wounded in the shoulder, police said.

CBS 5 investigated the man's background and learned he was just released from prison last month. He was there for drug and armed robbery convictions.
