This officer saved (we hope) a life, and perhaps those of others. It happens somewhere every day in one way or another, whether it's something like this, a fire that doesn't get started, an alert preventive patrol that makes a BG abandon his plans, or something else.
Every single day, an officer who is generally disregarded and demeaned by society - perhaps not even noticed by most as they rush through their lives - does something that means people will make it back home safely - people who, except for such officer's actions in the performance of his duty, would never make it home again.
