Nightclub guard shot to death in N.O.
Suspect flees, but hit by bullet down street
    Sunday, October 29, 2006
    From staff reports
A man prevented from entering an eastern New Orleans nightclub by a security guard early Saturday shot the guard to death and then was critically wounded when he exchanged gunfire with a guard from a nearby lounge, police said.

Investigators said Terrell L. Dowl, 29, of New Orleans was trying to enter the Passions nightclub at 3921 Downman Road just after 2 a.m. when he was stopped by the club's guard, Thomas Rogan, 28, of New Orleans.

Dowl produced an assault rifle and shot Rogan in the head and body, then began firing into the club, police said. He then fled to the 4000 block of Downman, the site of the Visions nightclub, the New Orleans Police Department reported.

A guard working at Visions saw Dowl running from Passions, rifle in hand, and ordered him to drop the weapon, according to police. Dowl then opened fire on the second guard, who returned fire, hitting Dowl once in the head. The second guard wasn't hit.

Emergency medical technicians pronounced Rogan dead at the scene. Police from the 7th District found a wounded Dowl in the 4000 block of Downman and transported him to the Charity Trauma Center in Elmwood, where he was listed in critical condition.

A 19-year-old woman inside the Passions club suffered a minor gunshot wound to a foot, but she refused medical treatment, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Dowl was trying to enter Passions with the rifle when he was stopped, police spokesman Jeffrey Johnson said.

An autopsy showed Rogan died of several gunshot wounds, said chief coroner's investigator John Gagliano, who released his identity.

Dowl will be charged with one count of first-degree murder upon his release from the hospital, and no charges have been filed against the security guard who shot him, authorities said. Homicide Detective Donald Clogher is directing the investigation and can be reached at 658-5300.

Police declined to release the name of the wounded woman, pending notification of relatives. Johnson cited security reasons in not identifying the guard who shot Dowl.
