Besides the fact if JHACO did an inspection (they know no hours) that would be a HUGE hit because of the OB center being right there

I think the reason the ICU gets mad at us when we enforce the smoking policy is because they rarely ever have to utilize us. Their patients never run away, most of the visitors are humble, they don't deal with drunks, or have outburst's like the Detox & ER. So when they see me yell at them for smoking they just think I'm picking on them. They have no past reason to appreciate security the way the rest of the hospital does.

^ I'm not really concerned with the reasons they give. They don't have to give me a reason why they were smoking where they were; I'm not their daddy. As long as they move where I ask them it's all okay.

I try yo be polite to when asking somebody move. I never say, "You can't smoke there" or, "You have to move." Instead I make it about myself and my needs; "Ma'm, I'm sorry to bother you, but I need you to smoke across the way" or, "Now I'm not trying to bust your guys chops, but could I ask you to smoke over there?" (and point to direction) This has the effect of making the person feel less a need to defend themselves.

There have been times when patients on oxygen disconnect them selves from their tanks and proceed to smoke right outside the doors or will observe the smoking policy but leave their tank unguarded near the enterance, leaving unsuspecting smokers to light up when exiting the doors; unaware of any danger.

Starting the first of next year there is to be no smoking on hospital property at all. Not in cars, parking lots, garages or any such place. That should be fun consittering there is only one of us on for two shifts and two guys on the 4-12.

At least your patients dis-connect their oxygen. At our hospital we confront people almsot every day as they smoke in their wheelchairs with the tank attached. When told of the danger they usually reply that they forgot or they are too sick to remove the tank.......if your that sick.....why are you outside smoking!

We had this problem for a while. Staff would allow smokers on oxygen to leave the ward and go out to smoke, taking their oxygen tanks along! Finally it got so bad that the administration flat out said that patients on oxygen would not be allowed by staff to go out to smoke and that we (security) were to enforce this strictly.

The thing that bothered me about it is that if they'd blown themselves up, besides their, and other peoples, deaths you can just bet how fast the late patient's family would be suing - even when the family would take them out for the smoke. No common sense.
