  • Man Found Shot at Gun Range

    Dallas, TX:

Police investigated a shooting of an unidentified man at the DFW Gun Range at 1607 W. Mockingbird Ln. on Wednesday. This is a range popular with armed security officers in the north Texas area where commission courses and in-service requalification are done. According to the media statement, the man fired a few rounds from his handgun into a target and then was found dead with a shot to the head. Dallas police Sgt. J.W. Almy stated the death appeared to be suicidal or accidental since no one was near him when it happened.

Um - this may be a bit presumptuous, but since I have been there on a regular basis and I do not trust any of the individuals mentioned in that article and the facts presented seem really, uh, incomplete - I think I will find a different gun range. I would like to offer advice to others in Dallas to do the same if they believe the same as I do.

I remember an incident at a gun range where a young man was killed by a stray bullet that came from a part of the range far removed from where he was just sitting on a chair. Apparently, a shooter was using a highly modified pistol that would double fire if not used with extreme caution. It happened so fast that the shooter had no idea that his weapon had fired twice. It took a forensics investigation to convince him that he had done it.

According to that, though, nobody else was near him so that means he was the only one at the range. Also, considering the cash register directly adjacent to the range separated only by large plexiglass windows and it is just about always manned, why was no one around? I certainly wasn't there, but that story just sounds strange to me.

I'm confused about why you concluded that no one else was present. There were other shooters at the range. In addition, the boy's father was in the room where his son was shot. The investigators had to determine:

        - Who the shooter was.
        - How did the bullet end up in an area that was considered safe?
        - Why didn't the shooter know that he was the one who shot the kid?

That story played out on Court TV. It was determined there was a fault in the construction of the overhead baffles designed to stop bullets fired above the berm.

Thanks Bill. I hoped someone would verify the story.

Okay I'm late on this one again. The only information I had to go on was the little story I read on the Dallas Managed News, oops excuse me, I mean the Dallas Morning News. That story made it look like there was no one else present. Seeing those other posts sheds more light on the story. Half the building collapsed several weeks ago because of some flash flooding we had. They erected some temporary structures to be able to continue operating the range. That hurried construction would explain how an accidental shooting like that could happen.
