  • Need Supervisor

If any of you guys in the West Central Florida area (St. Pete) are interested - We have an opening for a supervisor. It pays a whopping 10 bucks an hour which is sure to attract highly qualified, security professionals, .....right? (and.... you get to be called, "Captain." Cool, huh?)

Ok, joking aside, it's a nice post at an upscale community Gatehouse with 24/7 security. The company has sent us several people to train but when they see 2500 cars a day come through the gate they go screaming off into the night.

We need someone who is computer literate, detail oriented and doesn't get rattled easily (especially, doesn't get rattled easily). Most of all, we need someone who has some teeny, tiny little bit of pride in how they perform. We've had about 30 dork-brained guards through here in the last 5 years..... most of them I shot and buried out back.... nobody has missed them so far.

I turned down the position because I don't want to work the first shift and I don't think our company has anybody else qualified for it, otherwise, we'd have one by now. It's been about 3 weeks. It might not be open long. Any day now, the company will find someone with an acceptable body temperature and, reasonably, steady heart beat and send them out here while they're still warm.... and I'll have to dig another hole out back.

Anyway, if you'd like to talk about it, email me at [email protected]

No longer in St. Pete, but you might want to post some clue as to who the contract holder is. Especially if the employer is using the "Site Captain" concept.

If Captains make $10/hr., I'd sure hate to see what Lt.'s and Sgt.'s make, let alone officers.

What Lieutenants? Most of the companies in St. Petersburg, Florida, assign one Captain to the site, and the rest are Guards (do not write officer on the log, you are not an officer, only the police are officers).

There may or may not be a night shift sergeant on the post, who makes .10 cents more.

The titles are meant to parallel those of the military or police. I don't know any police department that has just a Captain and officers.

I understand the idea behind para-military titles and uniforms, but I can't keep a straight face when calling someone "Sergeant" or "Captain" who's not in the military or a police agency. I just call my Sergeant "my supervisor."

Montreal Police almost did away with these titles. They changed to having Commanders in charge of the stations & Sgts (or Superviseurs). Recently they added back Lt. but there are no Capt.s

I break down the difference like this. The difference between Sgt, Lt, and Captain at a security company is the difference between "go home", "you're suspended", and "you're fired and will never work here again."

I once worked for a company that used the FULL USMC rank structure. Im serious, the owner was an ex (not retired, he did 4 years) Marine. My shift supervisor was a Gunnery Segreant and our Site Manager was a 1st Lieutenant. The LT made 9 bucks an hour, the Gunny made 8, I made 6. The Owner was a Lieutenant Colonel and his second in command (his wife) was a Major, his Brother was the Company's "Master Sergeant".. It was a company of 60 employees lol. Kinda funny because the owner left the Marines a Lance Corporal...

I worked there for a month (and made it to the Rank of PFC, 2 more weeks and I'd have been a Lance Corporal lol) and left, the whole thing was kind of silly and the posts they put you on were so Ghetto it made the TV show "Good Times" look like "Dynasty"...

I am not at liberty to comment on your statements, as I may earn the wrath of my former employer.

It's just the way it is.

The corporate world is guilty of the same hierarchy. Clerk, Senior Clerk, Supervisor, Assistant Manager, Manager, General Manager, Assistant VP(s), Vice Presidents, Senior Vice Presidents, Executive Vice President, CFO, COO, President, CEO, Chairman....
