Found what I was reading.

To get a security company, you need to either have been in the security/police field for a few years, or have a CJ degree.
Nothing for any other class of license.
MSP seems to have some kind of "security guard" license, which they intermitantly call "Security Police Officer" and "Security Guard."

No regulation, no required training, and no professional groups to look up to for a standard of training. No people skills. No understanding of what you can and can't do. No wonder.

Oh time for me to climb up on my soapbox!
Michigan when I left last year, had absolutely NO licensing or certification requirements. For ANY security officer, armed or unarmed. You are required to have your fingerprints sent to the State Police. Most companies do some type of inhouse training. One company I worked for it was watch a series of video tapes (published in the early 80s) take a test and then OJT or FTO time depending on what division you were in. I once worked an armed post (movie theater downtown during a rash of theater robberies.) when they sent me a kid who was maybe a month over 21, first time he had used a weapon was on the range to qualify (you were required to qualify with the weapon you carried and I believe this was a state requirement) and was walking around like he was billy badass. Kept pulling his mags out to look at them, saying I was a p***y for wearing a vest so on and so on. I told the office if they ever sent someone out to me like that again I would walk.
Anyways, when I was in Michigan I was one of the strongest supportors for regulation of security up there, don't think it's happened yet but one can hope.
(climbs off soapbox)

Isn't this the state that requires a CJ degree to be a security guard?

The altercation stemmed from an incident where the security guard was escorting the 17 year old subject from the mall for swearing.

Remember, you may be able to justify a removal. You may be able to justify handcuffing or even fighting if the circumstances are right. You can never justify to your employer, the court, or the public your participation in a verbal altercation.
