I read, a few minutes ago, one of the "Request for Proposal" documents that Allied Barton gives out to those who are wondering "how to contract guards."

It noted that there should be multiple ranks on each account, with multiple pay grades, because "higher ranking guards are more experienced, and a higher pay will attract higher quality guards." They were basically telling people to ask how many sergeants, how many captains, etc, were going to be assigned to their property, the rank of each person during each shift, etc.

Now I see where we get Site Captains. The client asks for them.

I knew this one nationwide company, who was notorious for giving a step up in rank with each lousy nickel an hour raise. Some of them stopped at this post I was working(armed security at a convienience store); they thought they were something better in the security business than I was, because of that frivilious rank. I told them right back they wouldn't even make first cut to work for the company I worked for, or do the job I was doing. One even made a near fatal mistake one night; tried to butt in when I was dealing with a subject. Tried telling me I was wrong, I should leave the subject alone, I didn't know what I was talking about, blah, blah, blah, and tried to grab my arm from behind as he butted in. This resulted in him getting shoved back so hard he went bouncing on his keester! The perp then looked past me and told the "expert security captain" that the situation was none of his business, that I was talking to him, and that I was just doing my job! I settled the situation with my subject, and he left the property with no further incident. I then talked to that idiot I had to shove back, telling him I was ready to get him fired from his job(I personally knew his Director), have him thrown in jail, and have him barred from the property!! I simply informed the dumbass to stay away from that place when I was on duty.

About the only two ranks the public and the LE community readily recognize are Sergeant(3 stripes), and Captain(two gold bars). Mosquito wings, corporal stripes, major oak leaves or General stars only add confusion everywhere. The way I see it, you're either in charge, or you aren't.

Good luck in your supervisory position. Remember where you came from, when you have to deal with your charges, yet make them realize you have your job to do, too. And be prepared to catch hell from both ends.

Another word of advice; never give anyone who flagrantly violates company rules(drinking, drugs, etc.) a break, especially those who are "finger pointers" who do so to draw attention away from their problems. It will come up from behind you and smack you. Just do your job, and you'll be fine.

Also, keep your own notebook when dealing without problem individuals; log in dates, times, all the good stuff. Have something to back up what you may have to say later.

    Good luck.

    5-question test? You mean like:

    - What is your name?
    - Can you spell "All Secure"?
    - What time does your shift start?
    - What is the client's name?
    - Why should you show up for work?

Sorry. I just don't know what came over me.

Are we to say a bank has a police style ranking system because they have loan officers?

I'm just sick of seeing captains and majors and colonels and apparently GENERALS in the security field. It's ridiculous...in my opinion.

But be steadfast, Mr. Security. Stick with your opinions. Maybe your company's owner will see your determination and strong will and find those to be admirable qualities. Perhaps he'll promote you to Brigadier General. Or maybe Rear Admiral Upper Half.
I never saw a general, but I heard about a 3-star with Weiser. They would send him directly from Lousiana to "problem branches" to fire everyone and wave the flag.

The Unisys Corporation (This should show how old this story is) in Oldsmar, Florida was not impressed with their contractor sending a 3-star out to yell at the site officers. The idiot violated security protocols by hunting down the rover without escort, he did not have the proper DISCO clearance to roam around the facility, and he yelled at the client representative about how he was the commanding general of Weiser, and those guards answer to him.

    No.

I once worked for a company (in the early to mid-90s) that had a rank structure similar to this:

    Officer-Sgt-Lt-Cpt-Major-Field Inspector-Inspector-Colonel-Manager

...or something. Seems a lot of the office staff just had badges made with all sorts of titles on them. I was made a sergeant at one site, apparently for showing up on time for 3 months straight. Meant absolutely nothing to me.

We had a guy who retired as the security director for a local government's transit service, he brought the company the guard contract for the transit facilities and was hired as a Major...

Sure is irritating, as if one star wasn't enough to show he had an over active Patton complex. The citation ribbons over his badge were interesting too. And he wondered why I never took him seriously every time I met him after that.

Exactly! It's the stuff like that that irritates me. Did they address him as General? I mean, come on!

I know of a few FD's that use the police rank system, and I remember the Air Force firefighters used FD ranks even though they were military. Rank can't be thought of as a strictly "military" perogative. The boy scouts have a rank system, nobility has the same, and the corporate world definitely has one. What ever you call it, the terms merely identify your place within the hierarchy of your organization.
