From Security Management Daily:
"Security at County Colleges to Begin Carrying Guns"
Arizona Republic (01/07/08) ; Reid, Betty
Police officers assigned to provide security to the Maricopa County Community College District in Arizona will carry guns starting in the spring semester. At least 36 armed officers will be deployed to nine campuses of the district's 10 campuses. The officers received firearms training in December 2007 and will carry 45-caliber handguns. The community was forced to arm its campus police because of a new state law that requires sworn police officers to carry guns. The law went into effect in October 2007, six months after 32 students were shot and killed by another student at Virginia Tech. The campuses will still have an additional force of unarmed campus security personnel.
