  • Rank Structure

    A) While reading the "Are you surviving on your Security Pay" thread, I noticed a quote from "Black Ceasar" that included a snippit of one of his prior employer's ranks structure. It noted the Ranks of Colonel, Sergeant Major, and First Sergeant. I was curious to know what type of rank structures other companies use.

    B) Does your company require you to utilize that rank when addressing someone, i.e. Corporal Smith, Lt. Jones, etc.?

    Below is our Rank Structure

    1. Officer

    2. Officer First Class

    3. CPL.

    4. SGT.

    5. LT.

    6. Captain

Our rank structure at campus security is the following:

    1. Director of Security

    2. Shift Supervisor

    3. Patrol Officer

Not much to it, but it works considering we only have around 14 officers! lol

Officer (120 or so of these)

              Lead (2 of these)

              Supervisor (1 of these)

              B) Does your company require you to utilize that rank when addressing someone, i.e. Corporal Smith, Lt. Jones, etc.?
              No way

I laughed for a long time when i was working at another site once...I am and was then an 'officer'; the adjacent parking area had another security company that had everything from 'private' to 'command sergeant major'. I gathered, from talking to one of their 'corporals', that these were not official within the company, it was strictly that site's head guy that had implemented them.

I once worked for a company (in the early to mid-90s) that had a rank structure similar to this:

              Officer-Sgt-Lt-Cpt-Major-Field Inspector-Inspector-Colonel-Manager

...or something. Seems a lot of the office staff just had badges made with all sorts of titles on them. I was made a sergeant at one site, apparently for showing up on time for 3 months straight. Meant absolutely nothing to me.

We had a guy who retired as the security director for a local government's transit service, he brought the company the guard contract for the transit facilities and was hired as a Major...

The company I worked for that had that rank structure was a true mom and pop outfit. At their hieight they may have had 10 or so contracts at any one time. Maybe 30 employees or so.

The Owner was an ex-marine (turns out his highest rank was something like Lance Corporal lol) so he game inself the rank of Colonel, even wore those full Birds on the collar or a regular button down shirt when he wasn't in uniform. His wife was the "Lt. Colonel" and I think his brother in law was a "Major".

The "Enlisted" ranks were a hoot though. I went from private to Lance Corporal to Sergeant Major then down to 1st Sergeant before I bailed (4 months total I think). Sadly, I never got to be a Gunnery Sergeant of Security (skipped that rank). one guy who was a personal friend of the Colonel was the company's "Master Gunnery Sergeant".

                  It was a wacky job.

I worked for one mom and Pop outfit, they Owner called himself "Cheif" and wore the rank of a 5 Star General, his wife was the "colonel" with birds. This guy ws a hoot, had more bells and whistles then I've ever seen on any uniform, to include military Generals

I need to find the company again in Australia but everyone was a private, corporal, etc just like in the miltary. It was just a bunch of clowns who have no life so wanted to big note themselves. It was made illegal using such ranks as similar to the police as well as anything with a miliatary nature. Also the use of stripes like a corporal were made illegal due to confusion and the company I worked for had us wear gold bars like a pilot, 1st officer with colour epaulettes for major crowd control events (250+ bodies).

Oh yeah I did go for an interview with them for some CPP work and watched as some dogs body came walking in and saluted his company owner and called him sir all the time. I knew it was not the right company for me after witnessing that - these were private security officers not MP's.

Lastly I worked with a colleague who was made an Inspector in his chosed field and being an expolice officer expected to be calls Sir or Inspector to this rough looking bunch of fools. I warned him to not confuse the Police with his civillian job but he refused to listen and within a few months was more hated than the tax man due to his demands of "call me sir".

                              None take Occs .................

No too many clowns walking around thinking they were police officers or military police and trying to be big shots when all they were employed to do was to be shopping centre carpark guards. Leave the fancy ranks for the military and police and other people like the coast guard, etc. We have people dressed in uniforms pulling drivers over and attacking them so the need for the restrictions on rank titles etc. I believe this is national and not just local to my state.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm 16 year olds ? Isn't legal in some counties to be having your 3rd child ? Some towns here usually have 2 kids by 16 for the free $$.
