  • Group effort needed?

A few times in conversations, I hear of the lack of one voice to speak for front line Security Officers. This forum goes a long way to unite us and discuss common failures in the industry of course, however those messages may be less than effective to many ears.

Any ideas? Could a group of (retired?) individuals have time to run a website / promote our causes to Human Resources Directors with mailouts and be the face?

    Just a thought!

You'll see what happens when an association, union, group, or anything else of security personnel try to band together at the internet/national/international level.

If you're thinking about this, start small, at your own post, city, etc. And be careful, your employer may decide that "unionization" is in the air and so too will be your butt.

"About Us" pages are supposed to provide information about the people who own or operate the organization...not information about the organization's products, services, etc. Other pages describe the products or services.

Here, the "About Us" pages only provide more chest-beating assertions about the training. When people go to "About Us" pages, they want to know is: Who is running this so-called "academy" and exactly what educational and other qualifications entitle them to offer training.

When I look at training schools, I don't just look at subject expertise. I look for expertise and qualifications in the field of adult training and education. A school should have trainers who are certified IN adult training methods. It should have people on staff (or at least consultants to the school) who have formal credentials in the field of adult education. This is a domain of expertise all its own and includes course creation, course delivery systems, modern educational technologies, and methods of proper assessment of training outcomes.

Subject matter expertise alone is not enough anymore to qualify someone to run an "academy", IMHO. It also takes expertise in the field of training itself, which is a whole other thing. Just because someone has been in security 25 years doesn't guarantee they know anything about security, in the first place. And it certainly doesn't guarantee that they know how to teach others, in the second place.
