  • Your "Bestest" Assignment Ever.

As my neighbours son told me about the "Bestest" thing at school today, I thought I would ask you all to describe your "bestest assignment ever".

For me I have several - from the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympics as I had a box seat (on duty) to the 20 hours I did in a Consulate Security post as a Consulate Constable to the premium rates on New Years Eve for the Y2k. But I can say working on NYE right on Sydney Harbour with the Channel 9 TV broadcast as the site co-ordinator was the best job for me. I was paid extremely well, fed very well (catering staff remember those who are helpful) and surrounded by Aussie / and international celebs as I got to watch both sets of fireworks (2100 and 2400).

My now wife was interstate with her family so I was alone for NYE so I had agreed to work it. Having already covered a day shift then 4 hours off then 11 hours and then an alarm call out coming home (4 hours at p/hols rate, thank you) I hit the sack at 1000 only to get a few hours sleep before flying out for my own work that night (I slept after dinner and woke up as we were coming in land).

Providing Guard Service to the technicians who set off the fireworks for
the 4th of July. I was a mere 20 feet away.

I was doing fine until a stray rocket landed in my boxer shorts

It was short lived, but this would have to be the best:

I was hired to watch a minor league baseball team's cars overnight while they were on the road. The shift was dusk till dawn. I was by myself (no crazy war stories to listen to.) The lot was completely surrounded by barbed wire fence and I was locked in.

So, I went out and got one of those AC/DC transformer boxes for my 94 Astro Van, plugged in a TV and set it on one of those portable dining tables. Next, I hooked up my PS2 and played video games all night except for when the reruns of cops were on.

Basically, I was paid $10 an hour to keep a bunch of spoiled little fresh out of college kids from worrying about their nice little cars.

I eventually got bored of this job and realized I was wasting my talents.

      But it was fun!

I forgot about also working at one of Metro-Boston's largest Toyota delaerships midnight to 0800. Once an hour I had to walk around the showroom and service bays, and the sales office. That took about
15 minutes. Rattle doors and make sure all is quiet.

The dealership said at all other times it was okay to sit in the salesmen lunch area and lounge. They had a 52 inch television with cable. Cable included
        the Playboy channel.

But knowing my luck some would find me
breathing heavly as Miss October was on, so I watched a John Wayne
marathon movie night. The Duke and I had a good night.

I'm an emergency services buff. Way back before my hotel days I was a floater for Pinkerton. Was sent one night to the Kenworth repair centre. There in one of the bays was an aerial ladder from a local fire department. Inside the cab was a sheet of paper with all their 10-codes, which I did not know at the time!

We had a contract for the overnight security of an Electronics company which was setting up a store / warehouse. I was in heaven when first plasma screens in Australia were set up for Demo with a DVD system for some $25k (you can get better for 10% now). I watched a few DVD that were there for demo use in between patrol duties and it made my night go faster.

Another client I had was a law firm and after hours S/O's manned the office area for any late arriving clients. After 2200 everyone usually had gone home and the clients insisted the rear projector was used to watch tv or view movies (no ****) to ensure that it was in good order for the morning's broadcast from the USA (ie. burnt lamps, etc). You could watch it through the glass walls of the conference room without leaving the front desk. I never had issues with anyone NOT wanting to work this post for 10 hour shifts as all meals were provided as well.

My best contract security assignment involved (directly and indirectly) Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban.

Back in mid '97 I was working part time on the GSA contract (for Alrod Security) at the Dallas Federal building, then (like an idiot) I left there to take a spot with another company who had the HUD contract. Well HUD sold the property we were working and the company I worked for had nothing else in Dallas, so I went back to Wackenhut where I'd worked previously.

              (This is the indirect part)
My 1st assignment as a CPO was as a "fill-in" for a guy going on vacation. I was assigned To this under construction property being built by a Dan Phillips (a bank bigwig of some kind). Worked there for 2 weeks.

The place blew my mind. Read the description in the link I posted above, the place is incredible. The TV in the main living area was so big they had to assemble it in the house because there was no door it would fit through lol. The Lt. who briefed me about the job told me to carefully watch the staging site because they had just delived the $600,000 worth of marble for the floors. The Guest house would easily fetch half a mil just by itself. The attached garages have full bathroom suits complete with showers and bath tubs (just incase you can't make it in to the house and feel dirty lol)....

I'm not some hippy communist type at all, but I kept thinking "damn, you could feed all of the 3rd world for the cost of this house" LOL.

I was told to keep unauthorized folks off the property. One night I'm sitting in my car and a Limo pulls up. As I approach 2 "Secret Service" styled bodyguards get out (which stops me cold in my tracks lol) and then H Ross Perot (a freind of Dan Phillips I found out later) gets out of the car. Nice guy, shook my hand, then just stared at the house, said "DAAAMMNNNN" and left.

I hated to leave after my 2 weeks was up. I heard later the Mark Cuban bought the house from Phillips (and that Phillips bank had gone under, even before the house was finished).

              (The direct part)

After leaving that assignment I went from place to place , where ever Wackenhut would send me for the next 2 months. I got tired of that and asked for a permanent assignment, and they assigned me to a new contract at a company in the Deep Ellum section of Dallas called Broadcast.com (started but Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner, they sold it later on for billions and now it's Yahoo Launchcast). Nice people there, Mr Cuban was very very nice, Mr. Wagner was more the quiet type but still very polite.

The employees were very appreciative of our presance even. One employee showed us the bullet hole in the wall from a guard with the last company. The Guard thought it was a good Idea to clean his gun while on duty, which is how Wackenhut ended up getting the contract lol.

I made friends with one of the production managers and eventually he found out I worked part time for the College District Police. He told me he'd hired a lot of people from the college I worked at, and that I should consider taking a course in HTML or such, that he'd hire me if I did. Me being Mr. dedication to Law Enforcment, I told him thanks, but I like what I'm doing......

......A year later Broadcast.com went public and damn near every employee became independantly wealthy because of their stock options..... I'm STILL kicking myself for that after 10 years LOL.

I can appreciate that... I once worked a day shift patrolling the site where they build, repair & modify large fire appliances, I was able to get closer than ever before to some of the latest machinery destined for Fire Brigades all over the country... it was a sweet assignment!

My best assignment came when I was still in the USMC. When I returned from Vietnam I found myself assigned to the State Department working in plainclothes.

My favorite post was Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. Nice and quiet on the midnight shift; the Field Supervisor was too scared to enter the cemetery to check up on me; had lots of time to read and listen to talk radio. Once in awhile I'd get an alarm on a mausoleum, people in the occult hanging around, skinny dippers in the pond, and cute little goth chicks with Quija boards or sitting on graves writing bad poetry just to keep things interesting.

My favorite temporary post was for a fashion show at a shopping mall. They posted me on a stool by the backstage entrance to keep people that didn't belong out. It didn't seem like much of an assignment until the show started, and the first models coming off the runway started taking stuff off to change into the next outfit. Those girls were not shy at all.
I worked 2 shows Friday, and 4 on Saturday. My wife couldn't figure out why I was so frisky that weekend!!

Oh Heavenly Dog (the movie starring Benji) was shot at the first hotel I worked at. I also got to sit outside a suite once while Johnny & June Cash had their afternoon naps.

Funny I was half reading your post and half watching cops. I thought at first you were saying that the dog in the movie got shot in your hotel. Holy crap they shot little Benji. Sure got my full attention then.

A post I worked on the Hudson river in Weehawken township was a favorite of mine. Raw fenced in land being readied for townhouse construction. Just had to do a couple of rounds to make sure no one was on the property. The owner actually gave us a t.v. for the gatehouse and my site supervisor had no problem that we watched t.v. just as long as full rounds were made. This was a part-time spot for me, I didn't miss any games during football season. j
