  • How close are you to your team??

    Hi everyone,

I work in a small country town doing resort securitry. We are a fairly close team in that we going out for dinner, have bbqs etc.

I was wondering how close you are to the rest of your team members.

    Cheers

It is good that you all are close but sometimes this can lead to other issues and be may be considered "pissing in someone's pocket". I have always taken an interest in my teams and have been careful for us to keep that boss - staff relationship without it being made too obvious. Some people this is good and for other people this is just not possible. I would often spend time speaking with my crews so that any issues would come to light before they hit the work scene.

However, I do know of 1 client whom I was engaged to investigate a major issue over the security personnel who during a social event escalated an argument after a drunken staff member was alleged to have groped the drunken wife of another colleague. It ended up being brought to work the next week and the incident became a workplace issue with staff choosing sides. If you tread carefully and keep it simple then all should be honky dory.

I attempt to get along with everyone I work with... some people are easier to work with than others, but it's always been my personal rule to never socialise with fellow employees outside of work hours

I keep a close working relationship with all my guys on the job. But other than having a Christmas party at my house for them I tend not to socialize off the job with people who work for me. I've seen other supervisors who did, and it often came back to bite them.

some times things are 'clicky' but some of us like to go for beer's together now and then and are close friends off the job. Sticking to gether and talking about work problems or whatever are good. Some of us are closer than others too. It's fun to just talk or laugh about work's stupid little situations or general BS and know that "your not the only one". Sometimes when in an rule enforcement type role some people won't like you just for doing your job... So a good group of friends is great both on and off the job. I've always liked the saying that "the team that plays together, is the team that stays together"...
I'm the guy you don't want to be around when your doing something wrong, but you can't wait for me to get there when your down, to fix you up...

Working in a non-sec. management role, I watched the Friday night drinkies escalate into to a private club. I worked a 2nd job in security and was studying, so had little time for me. If you went home to be with family or do something else you were outcasted by those in this group and watching some of the old blokes who had kids the age of some of the women acting like sicko's was something I could not handle. On those rare occassion I just kept my distance away from that group. The result was I applied for new positions outside of this branch and when being interviewed I met 1 of our female managers in every interview - instantly I failed the interview.

Every workplace has the same people - the butt kissers, the vets who believe they own the company, the wannabes and those who come in to cause trouble - not to mention the Jealous Johnnies. You have a better assignement and suddenly people complain behind your back. You become promoted and suddenly it is a conspiracy. You change the rules and suddenly people begin a hatred campaign against. My crew and I are close but do not piss in each others pockets.

Its usually, in one form or another, suck up to the boss trying to get an unfair advantage on the competition workers. The boss thinks he is reaching out to his staff, but usually gets sucked in by the brown nosing and ends up giving unfair advantages hurting his own productivity.

That is why fraternization or even socializing (not at open company sponsered events) is frowned upon by management protocol 'unwritten' policies. It is borderline illegal no matter what the rationalizations, except if there are only a population of 20 on an island or something similar.

It usually helps the worker, sometimes hurts the manager, and never helps the organization. Managers shouldn't be hard up enough to 'order' his friends to patronize him.

I admit it. I am good buddies with another Security Officer. This officer
works at a different post, but we work for the same contract Security company.

We go to hockey games togther, have dinner every night, go on vaction, open Christmas presents togther, and have quiet times alone with each other, and have two daugters and a son.

Oh, did I mention this team member is my wife of 25 years?

Well at my current site we are all rather new, the company I work for just started this site and I believe it is their first time doing a site outside their home state(Alaska). We have been here for about five months and we all seem to get along well and keep eachother informed. There are five of us including the "Boss" and I know two of them went to High School together or something.

But we seem to all have a lot of experiance minus one(newest member is green), and so far everything is working great. We don't really do much of anything together but we all seem friendly with eachother and help eachother out when we can.

I'm not close with any of my coworkers. Only one has ever been to my house and that so he could help me with a computer networking problem. We work, do shift change and go our different ways.
