    "Gunman Arrested on NYC College Campus"

    NEW YORK - A college student with a rifle and wearing a George Bush Halloween mask was apprehended Wednesday after walking through a campus of St. John's University, police said.

    Security officers and another student tackled the man, who was carrying a single-shot rifle that was sticking out of a bag, as he walked toward a library, police said. No injuries were reported.

    Wow. Good work on the part of security and the student! Very possibly prevented a violent situation.

      Great job. The student was a police cadet, so he picked the right career path, no fear there.

      Unarmed SO....when will these college admins learn?

      Anyone know if private colleges in NY can have armed officers and/or campus police?

        They can have Peace Officers, which in NY requires a special act of the legislature. A Peace Officer in NY is not a police officer. Hint: Building Inspectors are "peace officers" in NY.

        One of our former members used to impersonate a peace officer, till another member called his boss up and asked about it.

            I'll never understand why some colleges have unarmed police departments. One of my former boses quit his job as Chief of Police for San Francisco Community College when the adminsitration refused to arm their officers. Even after the VT shooting, the administration refused to arm their police officers. I can tell you that some of the campuses in the SFCC district are in rough neighborhoods. These officers even conduct traffic stops (which I wouldn't do without a firearm).

            As far as the NYC Campus officers and the student who tackled the armed suspect, great job. Their quick thinking and actions probably prevented another campus tragedy.

              Nice job and all but did you notice who it was who was named and got their picture in the paper? Wasn't the security officer whose role was downplayed.

                The security personnel are "paid to do that," so its not so much about them. Standard mindset.

                    The Cadet and the officer are pictured on all 3 news articles I've read concerning this. Even the one At officer.com. And can we concentrate on the brave actions of these 2 men (and the incredibly fast resonse by the rest of the College Security Dept. that started evacuating students and containing the suspect) and not on any percieved slights?

                      Interesting. My local paper apparently had abbreviated coverage of the incident. I should have checked another source before jumping to conclusions.
