  • You believe her to be the target of a stalker, and....

Test Your Skills of Discernment Here:An attractive woman comes into the public facility where you are on post. You had begun to walk out the front door, passing this woman who began conversing with a man who frequents your facility. Suddenly, an employee of the facility working a counter at the door where the woman and man are standing calls you over. He whispers something you do not hear, as your attention is focused on what is being said between the two. You hear the man ask the woman if she comes often to the facility.
HE REACHES OVER AND TOUCHES HER ARM SEVERAL TIMES, THOUGH SHE DOES NOT DRAW BACK.
Obviously, she does not know him, but is not unnerved by him. You detect she has an accent.
You settle into a chair next to the employee, and the woman asks you where there is a copy machine. You watch carefully as she enters the elevator, making sure the man does not follow her.
Only then does the employee whisper to you that the man had been asking questions about the woman earlier, i.e., if she was a regular at the facility, etc.
The woman is oblivious to the fact that this man had been seeking info on her.
QUESTION: WOULD YOU ALERT THIS WOMAN AS TO THE MAN'S INTEREST IN HER? WHY OR WHY NOT?

that in and of itself may just be a case of actively looking to score. I'm not talking about cornering her at her door, I mean trying to get into a situation to talk to her again, possibly score some digits. Back in the day that's what nightclubs were for. Now they just seem to attract rapists and bullets.

If you have not been informed by the woman she is being stalked, and it is a public place, then the most you should do is contact your supervisor and request instructions.

Quite frankly, if the man is allowed in the business, its between him and her how he places his hands on her, so long as it doesn't violate the rules or laws you are required to enforce.

For most O&R companies, this is a prime example of how to get fired: Annoying a client employee.

        I informed her....

Yes, I informed her, and she was alarmed. I told her it might well be nothing that may continue outside of the facility. However, if the guy began showing up where she works, attends school, etc., hey, forewarned is forearmed. Even if this male individual did perpetrate harassment or worse upon this woman outside of my post later, I felt it my duty to alert her to his interest as I was privy to this knowledge. If she is awakened deep in the night by this tomcat wailing a number by Michael Bolton under her window, maybe then it would be time to get the PD involved...
Now she knows to remember his appearance, and will keep an eye out for him.
However, I would encourage the continued voice of experience in this matter...

This is one of those cases where you really had to be there to witness the nuances of body language and the like.

I probably would have done the same thing you did if someone else had told me this guy had been poking around asking about her.

The word stalking is used a bit liberally in your post. I would guess most people would have been guilty of stalking at one point in time if you consider his conduct as stated to be stalking.

                ROFL!

Man, that's the best laugh I've had all week .

edit: Let me say this, IF the guy was just trying to get to know a pretty lady, that's normal and perhaps Izzy' reaction was a bit much. If the Guy is a closeted Serial Killer with rape fantasies because his alcoholic mother never loved him, well, Izzy just saved that woman's life.............

That's the problem, BC. If the woman didn't like the interference, he's probably being moved to another post or out of a job.

Nathan in this case he decided, based on previous training, observations and experiences to make a judgment call hoping for a successful outcome. Apparently it was to good effect.

                        ...more input for 'ya...

Okay, guys, let me add to the scenario of this guy approaching a woman he obviously didn't know, repeatedly touching her on the arm....
                        1) Okay...this is a facility located near both a college campus, as well as economically depressed areas. This facility is open both to those who are paying for a reason to be there, as well as those who come in off the street to escape the heat, the cold, the little voices in their heads and, who knows? maybe the police. Maybe even the guys in the white coats with those fun butterfly nets...
                        2) There is a local nightspot where, according to a cop friend of mine, NO LESS THAN THREE CELEBRITIES FROM "AMERICA'S MOST WANTED" HAVE BEEN APPREHENDED. I S*** YOU NOT.
                        3) After this woman had left, and I began to observe this man more closely, I noticed he seemed to have been talking to himself, to God, or maybe to a little green man only he could see sitting on his shoulder...
Now, being homeless in and of itself does not necessarily mean one is insane. However, standing on a street corner, talking on a cell phone that IS NOT in your hand as you gesture to the sky may seem to be a hint. It is these self-same people who wind up milling about my post.
                        4) There are many, many people from other countries who frequent this library. They may not be too familiar with either the area, or how to get around safely in the country known to some of our middle-eastern friends as, "The Great Satan". This attractive, nubile young woman had done her best to conceal her accent, yet I asked where she was from. In short, I detected a naivete' about her, even though her country is known for, among other things, absolutely beautiful sugar-sand beaches frequented by lovely visitors such as herself, though sans bikini-top, or wearing nothing at all.
NOW, GO AHEAD AND ENJOY THAT LEWD PICTURE YOU HURRIEDLY SCRIBBLED WITH CRAYONS IN YOUR MIND, THEN GET YOUR INTUITIVE THINKING BACK IN GEAR! WOULD YOU HAVE ALERTED THIS WOMAN, OR NOT?
