  • Security Screeners fired

    Saturday, August 25, 2007 – Page A18

When the private company responsible for screening bags at Canada's airports fires screeners who raise safety concerns, the Canadian government should be concerned.

Four screening officers at Toronto's Pearson International Airport have been fired after alleging that making the planes run on time had been deemed more important than security. Three of those officers filed a complaint in February with Canada's Industrial Relations Board, alleging that passengers have boarded planes and luggage has been put on without checks when managers joined screening lines and rushed people through.

Garda World Security Corp. of Montreal, which screens bags at Pearson and other major Canadian airports, refuses to confirm the firings, let alone explain them. The company insists that at no time has security been compromised, and describes the four as disgruntled.
