  • The right time

What is the right time is it your watch or the client's time.
If you work same post day in day out i say the client's time.
If you go to different post every other day I think should be your watch.
How are you to know what the client's time is ahead of time?

Really depends on who's responsible for if you're "late" or not.

To me, its neither. Its whatever time the computer system or human taking attendance at your company has. If the client is responsible for taking attendance, then yer screwed.

        the right time

so you want got by the 15 min early rule. I think not my reason why is if you have reg 40 hour work week. You work a full year doing 40 hours a weekend and show up 15 min early you just work 80 hours for free that year. I don't work for free and I think no one should.

Our RTO drummed it into us that punctuality is more than for appearances, for example if the SO you're changing over with happens to get into strife @ the end of the shift, they know you'll be there within minutes (less if you are regularly early), plus it allows extra time for an in depth 'hand over' (or what ever you guys call it)

FWIW I set my time by the 'talking clock' feature provided by our local Telco

I always thought 10-15 minutes early was normal protocol in shift arrivals. It allows communication time between shifts. It is only courtesy for the SO's on duty who have already been there the shift before. If you waste their time exchanging information or don't exchange information, then something is wrong. And then I try to keep my watch 2 minutes fast. Things just seem to go smoother the whole shift when you start out just a few minutes early in shift hand-offs.

I think 5-10 minutes early suffices. I have guys that show up each shift a half hour early. I appreciate it, but I don't look at them any different than the guy that shows up 5-10 minutes early. Now if someone is always playing beat the clock and coming in so late that the officer he is relieving has to hold over on their own time to pass along info then I have an issue.

We arrive for roll call at 2230hrs and our shift starts at 2300hrs. I'm usually 10-15 mins early for roll call everyday.

I go by the network set time on my Nextel, we all carry Nextel’s and therefore all have the same time. That being said, I think 15 minutes early is always a good thing. I have certainly worked with guys who show up 1 hour before shift start time. Most of them seem to just want some peace and quit before starting work, others like to eat before the shift starts. It doesn’t bother me if people show up early as long as they look respectable and conduct themselves responsibly on the job site.

Now people who roll in at 8pm for a 8pm shift, that bugs me for some reason. Its like they don’t have it together.

Generally speaking, I follow the 15 minute rule myself. I try to get a feel for the hot/active areas....

The gates go up automatically and I really hate to see them up before i arrive, but since theres no one I'm relieving I see no reason to arrive extra early.
