So, Our hospital has decided to try something new in the ER. Apparently because people don't know how to follow instructions (stay in lobby) or listen for their own name they are handing out these little things to alert them when it's their turn.



My first thoughts

1) They're gonna get stolen

2) Thank you for giving the irate/drunk/high patient something to hit me with.

If they can't stay in the lobby, or listen for their own name. Then OH WELL, next person. Those pagers don't have that great of a distance (from my understanding of them anyway). More money wasted IMHO....

It can be hard to focus when you're in an ER waiting room in serious pain. These aren't such a bad idea IMO. Ive sat in an ER with a horrible chest pain practically gasping for air unable to breathe, I waited in the ER lobby for about 5 minutes before they let me go back. Had it been a busy morning, I dont think I would have heard my name either.

We would never do that in our ER. Our stand is if your not paying attention and screwing around, oh well. You get your name called 3 times and then you get taken off the list and can wait another 4 hours. Our facility is smoke free, even outside on the grounds so you shouldn't be outside smoking.

Well, that's what we used to say to. BUT some administrator, who doesn't have to be in that ER when there's a couple hundred people in there thought it would be a good idea.

We have pagers like these at the hospital I work at. The big issue that caused us to get them is HIPPA. Management didnt want anyones name being called out. And yes ALOT have gotten stolen. Within the first 6 months I think 1/2 walked away. Fortunatly I haven't heard of any instances of them being thrown at any of my co-officers.

The paranoia over HIPPA has really gotten out of hand. The original intent was to prevent the abuse of medical information by employers and insurance agencies. It was meant to prevent just anyone from finding out your entire medical history. It quickly mutated into something else due to the lawers and suits in charge of some health systems misinterpreting the spirit of the law.

That pisses me off. People who will never use the equipment are the "experts." Like the guy at Corporate office at my work who hated Kenwood portable radios (which everyone wanted) and he killed that idea. The radio was nice and small. Perfect. But nope! Another guy I work with wants me to figure out a way to mount a Whelen Liberty to a luggage rack on a 2008 Honda CR-V. Whelen doesnt make such a mount for a Honda, that I am aware of. Grrrrr!

I can understand the security aspect of not calling out names, I can understand people may be sick in the washroom and will not hear their name, but would the old paper number dispensing unit not be cheaper?

It is wrong when money is taken from people that should be spent on providing better health care. A hospital up here sends out nice 2 language booklets complete with colour photos, showing all the good works they do. Could they not just keep a few of the books at the info counter and post it on their webpage?
