Yeah. Basically the Department of Energy runs this competition every year
and Security Forces, Law Enforcement Agencies, and Military Groups from all
over the country get together and compete in different individual and team
events. All of the D.O.E. teams are in their own category, while everyone
who is not D.O.E. is bunched together in another category.

How many police departments use the M249 machine gun, and therefore are qualified to bring two gunners with their team?
Just the fact that the competition makes having a M249 crew mandatory for competition re-enforces the idea that nuclear security is less about "playing cop," and more about being a military force designed to defeat hostile action towards a exclusion area. Some Kind of Commando Leader

N.A.,
While I've never heard of any police departments using the M249 for
anything, I believe the only qualification for the competition is
the "familiarization" course mentioned. While I can't speak for the Department
of Energy, I nevertheless think it would make sense to have the majority of a
security force on a high security or restricted site in a "cop" role dealing with
more mundane, everyday issues, and a select minority of the security force
in a more aggressive "para-military" role called to action in the event of a
hostile security breach."The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."

Further to the discussion on Nuclear Security.
Here is the Link to the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and the lastest annual report which might be of interest to those involved in similar roles in other countries.
The Civil Nuclear Constabulary is actively recruiting and it is interesting to note that whilst many officers stay in a generalist Police Officer role, others decide on a completely different development route. Career opportunities can include working in areas such as specialist firearms, intelligence, dog handling and marine escorts.

When I first started out in law enforcement I considered applying at the Lawrence Livermore Nuclear Laboratory Security-Police Department, I decided not to apply because they were recieving alot of bad press concerning security practices. I'm not sure if the stories were true, or just the work of sour employees. Sometimes I regret that decision.
The other day I was surfing the web, and came across a story about the LLNL police having access to gatling guns. These guns looked very fun to shoot. I would bet money the officers are experts with the guns. Thier SWAT team finished in the top five or six at the 2007 SWAT World Championships. In fact there were three teams in the top ten that were involved in security for nuclear laboratories (one of the teams was from Canada). The teams showed that traditional law enforcement doesn't have a monopoly on competent SWAT operators.
Stay Safe.
