      From the article:
"One guard said he was given this direction in case of an attack: "Call the police.""

Why is it when you tell a security guard to do anything but, the police throw a fit? And yet, one Officer.com, its said like its a bad thing?

I think in many cases the police believe, or perhaps know, that the security officer often isn't trained to do <whatever>, doesn't have proper backup, etc., and will just make the situation worse.

If security officers, by virtue of appropriate training, equipment, technology, etc. were seen by police officers as competent partners, I believe their attitudes about security officers being more "proactive" than just O&R might be different.

The article isn't from officer.com, it's an AP article reprinted with permission.

And the police don't always throw a fit when you take action, twice while working for private security companies I made arrests, and neither time did the Dallas Police give me any guff about it at all. I didn't even let them know I was a reserve at the time so it wasn't a case of good ole boy favoritism. One of the responding officers found out I was a reserve when we showed up at court for the 2nd guy's trial, the ADA mentioned it (that I reserved for a little town) in passing and he said to me "I didn't know you were police, why didn't you say something". I told him because it wasn't relevant right then.

It depends of the circuimstances (and whether or not the responding officers are biased or not), but in my experiance, if you do it right you probably won't catch any flak. Time and again I watched other S/Os do it wrong, then get mad and all defensive when the responding police told them so....

I hate to sound disrespectful towards Security officers, but I think it's a fair statement to say that a fair percentage of security officers are untrained, poorly paid, untrained, no back-up, untrained, individuals who are left hanging by their employers, and some of them have the cop complex, which really gives all of us a terrible name!! Also, the ones who are well trained and have backup can usually handle things on site without calling for the police unless an arrest needs to be made.
