Actually, the vest makes sense, especially in our line of work. I knew a guy that wore a weighted belt at times when he was running, basically to simulate the weight of his duty belt.

Ah, the 80s - yes kids, it was a weird decade. I was more of a Denise Austin fan myself, but any further comment belongs on a forum I probably would not go on.

On a serious note, I caught one of those shows one time where they had a 76-year-old retired cop doing bench presses. Besides thinking that I want to be that fit when I'm that age, my other thought was, "I really pity the young punks that ever try to mug this guy."

Beyond the basic minimum, I think S/Os should look at their site and tailor their fitness program to that. For example, if I worked in an office building that was 6 stories, I'd make sure I was fit enough to go up the stairs all the way to the top, regardless of whether there wan elevator or not. The site I'm at now has a lot of repetitive lifting of equipment, so strength training is what I do more of, than than running or cardio.

I think being reasonably fit is a deterrent to an altercation - the officer presence thing.

What are your thoughts on fitness? Not a mandatory fitness standard but in general?
I’ve worked in Corrections with some out of shape people and have seen worse in the security field.
from my personal experience being fit can determine the outcome of an altercation.
