DC Officer shooting

If the shooter in this case had been a civilian, that individual would be arrested and charged with violating Washington D.C.'s gun laws. The message is clear: Only the Police, in our Nations Capitol, can effectively defend their life and property from the thugs who roam freely without facing criminal charges.

The sensitivity to gun possession in DC is perhaps understandable, although it has not worked well, as you point out. I think I read that there are efforts underway to ease the law prohibiting CCW, at least somewhat.

Where the lawmakers got it wrong in DC was not requiring that members of Congress should all carry firearms (up to and including RPG's) and designating an official "dueling area" out back where the members could bang away at each other - not at 20 paces, but 2 paces because it's real important that they don't both miss and decide to work things out by trading pork-barrel spending bills with one another.

Soon, one would imagine, the House of Representatives would be reduced to the 3 or 4 dozen best (or quickest) shots, and the Senate to maybe 5 or 10, and compromise among these marksmen would be the only remaining alternative for settling disputes. With such a small Congress, there would be fewer bills introduced, and there wouldn't be so many committees. Also, debate would be limited to something less than 10 or 20 light-years as to whether the third word in section IV, paragraph (a), subparagraph (ii) of House Bill 395067 should be "must" or "shall". Lots less pork too, I'd imagine.

This way, maybe we'd see some improvement in their performance record. No one would miss the ones who lost their duels, I'm reasonably certain.

My question is this: What does an off duty cop shooting someone have to do with anything? If it was a story about a (non-LE) private citizen doing that, then getting prosecuted for it, your post would make sense. But it's not (about anything to do with private citizens and gun contrrol), and it doesn't (make any sense).

Not intending any offense, but I'm sure there have to be better examples of what you're talking about.

BTW, I think overly restrictive gun laws are not the best way to go. None of that is the fault of DC Police, the fault lies with the "powers that be" (in DCs case, the district government and congress) and Politicians.

Having interfaced with several campus PDs, all of whom were very professional and did much more than writing parking tickets (including major campus crime investigations, protection for celebrities, concerts and other major events on campus, etc.), and who would also sometimes participate in our own special ops, emergency drills, etc. in the immediate vicinity of the campus, I can only assume that the comment about "writing tickets" was simple ignorance about campus police.
