Nuclear Security : Inhouse & contract

Back in the 1970's a company I owned provided the contract security for a nuke power plant. We worked along side the in-house staff. Maybe I can answer some of your questions.

I know of one in the south that uses contract S/O's (armed to the neck)for perimeter security and have Nuclear Police (armed to the teeth) for the inner workings.

What is "Nuclear Police"?

The client I work for has a Nuclear Facility and they have both in-house and contract security. The in-house security are the supervisors and management while the contract security are the entry-level officers.

What is "Nuclear Police"?

Basically they are Police for the facility and commissioned either through the DOE or some States have their own licensing process. At the particular site I was at the Nuclear Police had statewide jurisdiction.

Department of Energy Security Patrol Officers. In other words, DOE contract cops with federal arrest authority. They're called security instead of police because they're primary mission is to secure, not police, the nuclear infrastructure.

These are not the kind of people who guys go, "Oh, its just a security guard."

I have heard that at Wolfcreek Kansas, they had a split force like us. The way the story goes is they organized a union and during/after contract neg. that NLRB mediated that they should be all inhouse. Anyone hear about this ??
