Anyone work for the security giant AKAL? What do you know about the company?

    Akal

I see them drive past my hospital every shift at least once, but I have never heard of them prior to seeing them over the last year, I guess I didn't realize they were a "giant."
    Apparently a HUGE cop wannabe...

Yeah they are pretty huge. The have some contracts at the Army depot near where I live. They also have some folks at the Federal Court building in town.
Probably some other places too. Don't know a lot about them other than what I just wrote, I know that they initially hired many, many officers but laid a large group off after a few months, they did give them a severance package however. They also hired a few back later on when they had figured out what size crew they needed. I was told all this by a friend who went to work for them. He was part of the layoff, he could have went back to work for them but instead he was called up for duty in Irac. Just google them and there should be plenty of info.

Out here they have the Ft. Lewis Gate contract so you will see them at various gates. From what Ive heard is they have a good job, but the administration is horrible.

yeah I think they have some people on the gates at whats left of Ft Mcclellan here as well and I think they man some gates at the Army Depot too. Most of those gates and all restricted areas are covred by DOD Guards or Police, I am not sure of their job title but they have certain authority to make arrests . I beleve that some of the AKAL guards could inforce certain laws pertaining to the base and have written some citations to traffic offenders. Frankly I was surprised when they showed up and started
doing interviews, just a short while later they had people in training and some already working a couple gates. I have not been around too many of their employees but most of the ones I have spoken with were doing o.k with them.
And were not complaining about what they had to do and so on, as many new hires do.

On Ft Lewis, I heard they pretty much have to call MPs for anything that happens. They had an incident not too long ago where they opened fire on a pickup truck. I guess the truck tried to hit one of the guards and SOMEHOW ended up getting away with his gun. AKAL guards opened fire on it as it was driving away from the base.

Yeah they are limited in what they can do. At the army depot however I don't think there are many if any MP,S i think dod officers handle most serious calls and akal does mostly gate and foot patrol. I know that i was told they direct and work traffic and can issue citations but only at the depot.

In Canada the Corps of Commissioners has the right of first refusal on all federal governemtn contracts. Until recently you had to be an ex military or ex RCMP to work for them.

Wow those are all big companies that seem to have great opportunties. Does anyone know if it is a must to have 3 years as a leo to work as a court officer?

Court Security Officers are not security guards. If you read the GSA General Schedule, it outlines that a CSO has specific duties that a Guard I (The GSA GS rating of a security guard) will never have.

Most agencies want their CSOs to be former LE or military. Depending on the agency, they will give the CSO limited or full arrest powers. Guard Is are not given arrest powers, and Guard IIs (Armed guards) usually are not.

Any contractor who goes through GSA Advantage certification can offer CSOs, Guard Is, Guard IIs, or Security Police Officers. They just have to register with GSA, go through the hoops, and offer specialized pricing to agencies.
