The best way to search a person for anything, not just a hidden handcuff key, is the grasping hand technique. This not a technique I can easily describe in writing, but maybe someone who knows the technique in your neck of the woods can show you.
The most common places crooks hide handcuff keys are in the shoes, the cuff of their pants legs, in their mouth, the watch pocket (sometimes called the change pocket) of their pants, and up their butt. Use your imagination and you can think of several more in addition to the places you already mentioned, but they are going to be someplace they can reach with their hands cuffed behind their backs.

Like you said histfan71, just let your imagination run wild. If you don't think it can be hidden there, it probably can.
Enjoy the day,
