  • How do you lay out your duty belt?

Just as the title says, how do you lay yours out? Pictures would be helpful.

I keep everything away from my back area. I found that even a glove pouch can hurt when you sit for a number of hours. At first, you set up to look good. After awhile, when you start hurting, you'll realize that comfort is up there on the priority list.

A good inner belt helps with balance but I also was told to go for 6 belt keepers because they help to hold your heavier gear around your waist. Depending on your requirements, you need to consider:

      1. Where you will be working from (car or post)
      2. What is going to snag on a chair or car seat
      3. Do you need to carry so much gear
      4. Are you up and down often or in and out of a car

Most police follow the 3 o'clock firearms and 4 o'clock baton holder right behind - but I am still a 9 o'clock baton and 9.30 cuffs user as is old school. Everything needs to be 2nd nature and be there for easy access and loading and if you carry a personal torch, you need to know WHERE it is. Lastly you don't want to leave anything behind.

FYI I have heard of police on sick leave due to 20lb duty belts causing back injuries (I won't comment here).

i'm a lefty so try to visualize a mirror image.

from the buckle-o-justice moving towards my right hand -

          double open top mag pouch
          keeper
          blade-tech taser holster
          2oz pepper
          surefire c2
          radio
          BFF leather light holder
          Closed cuff pouch
          keeper
          space across the back
          keeper
          silenced key holder
          beater stick pouch
          holster
          keeper
          open top cuff holder

and we have arrived back at the ol' buckle-o-justice

yes it is heavy, but damn i look good! hehe

I too had been keeping my gloves in the small of my back, but as of recently my back has been hurting me from doing that so I changed that. From Left to right..

                    Cell Phone
Keeper (duty keys hanging from it)
                    Baton tilted
                    Knife in single mag pouch
                    keeper
                    Radio
                    keeper
                    Stinger XT
                    Gloves and face shield
                    keeper
                    keeper with hidden key
                    Handcuffs
MK4 pouch with misc stuff in it.. extra pen, ear piece, sanitizer..
                    keeper
Old glove pouch - for my field interogation cards and whatnot..
                    silent key
                    keeper
                    OC MK3

                      from buckle going clockwise:

pager case (keep 2 pairs of latex gloves in it)
                      silent key holder
                      oc
                      keeper
                      gun
                      keeper
                      single cuff case
single keeper in center of back
                      flashlight ring
                      flashlight holder (streamlight stinger)
                      keeper
                      radio
                      baton
                      keeper
baton ring (yes, I'm old school and still carry a wooden baton at times )
                      double cuff case
                      mags

Yes, it's a rather odd and unconventional setup, but it works for me and is comfortable. I used this when I was an armored car guard for just under two years, and I never had pain or discomfort from my duty gear.

So when you carry the straight baton do you carry the expandable also?

That's more gear then I have ever seen an armored car officer wear! Around here 90% of them wear a gun and nothing else. Not even extra mags or speed loaders. I have seen a few that do but not many.

Most CIT security in Australia wear a holster on a trouser belt but some do wear duty belts, with a holster, key fob, mobile phone pouch, latex gloves pouch and maybe a small torch. No handcuffs or OC spray (not permitted unless specifically required) and as this part of our industry is heavily unionised, not providing a 2nd pen would be grounds for striking as the union pushes for the provision of everything they want and get to.

Hmm I don't think that applies to SA as I have never seen a CIT officer carry a firearm on a belt unless its been a plain clothes carry. I do both plain clothes and uniformed and even in plain clothes I still use a duty belt.

As far as cuffs go I carry 2-3 pairs both uniformed and plain clothes.

                              Each state varies I guess.
