What the hell is an ID card??

In Newfoundland, Canada, the Government of Newfoundland, Department of Government Services, Trade Practices Division, gives you a paper - paper, mind you, not even laminated - licence with no picture. It's almost useless.

And there was talk just a month or so ago by the government of eliminating that.

That's the same government that allows guards to work for 3 months(!!!) without a Certificate of Conduct (criminal record check), training, or licence. Thank the gods they're not armed...


So many reasons to hate working here...

Some US States require:
- A "license" to perform duties, which may or may not have your picture.
- A "Company ID Card" which shows that your an employee, without picture.

That's about it.

And they actually tried to make it a rule a while back in OR that you COULDN'T laminate them.. (like a SSI card) fortunately that one got overthrown... Florida issues Magikote or Fargo "Credit Card Like" or "Driver's License Like" IDs for all occupations managed by Division of Licensing. Interesting note: The Concealed Weapons Permitting System is also under DoL control, so they get an almost similar ID.

Our D, DI, G, and other licenses are not marked 'Not for Identification Purposes,' but the W card is. I had a non-client (member of the board on a condo association) give me a W card as a form of intimidation when asked for ID. Since the board was not authorized in the clubhouse at night, it earned him "armed trespass."

You think that's bad? Here in Ontario (Canada) our cards are pink! Also, they're slightly larger than a standard card, so you can't keep in it a card slot in your wallet. As well, the picture is glued onto the card itself, so there's no stopping anyone from simply peeling off the picture and gluing their own on.

By HIPPA, I mean storing your edition of the card information, since you'd need a copy for scene management, like your engine and FF tags. That information would be privvy to HIPPA safeguards.

Yeah, the file would have to be either encrypted or password protected with restricted access. The info could be kept on a CD, floppy, or DVD as long as it was kept in a secure place.

As long as you take safety precautions as outlined in HIPPA, I don't think it can come back and bite you in the ass.

Don't forget to inform the local FD and EMS providers that all your employees carry medic tags.

One thing about being involved with FD and EMS in 2 counties is I know just about everyone that would respond or at least their ageincies.
But that is very good advice.

Company I work for has 2 buildings at JFK. Can't walk around the building without an escort if you don't have a NYPA badge. So, I got the badge. Miami and Atlanta ID's to follow shortly

The company I work for is in the mists of growing pains and we do not have an ID card system in place yet. I am looking for a simple lamination system to use so that at least I can ID my officers out of my office. Now I can get the lamination from Staples of course so I am really looking for a badge template. I only have 100 or so officer right now so I have no need for a major independent ID card system. Does anyone know of a system/on line/ store purchase that sounds like it meets my needs? I could even do the photos in my office, or use a digital camera.

Its not that hard to do ID badges on the cheap. First, do you have a program such as Microsoft Word or perferably Microsoft Publisher?

Design the ID card template. Look at your state license, or a driver's license for the "look" of the card. Does your state require a company ID? If not, then you can put basically anything you want on it within reason and the law.

At a minimum, it should contain:
Employee's Full Name
Employee's State License Numbers
Employer Name and Address
Employer State License Number
Employee's Position in Company
Employee's Date of Hire
Employee's ID Number

Some states do not require a picture on the ID, but I believe its more useful to have a picture on the ID, as well as a signature.

If you have a simple 20.00 webcam, clear lighting conditions in the photography area, you can do digital IDs. A 1 MP webcam will yield OK results, but real cameras work better - if its easy to grab the picture, crop it, and paste it into the "picture" box in your program.

As far as templates, if your asking for a template, we need to know what state your in, what laws pertaining to security IDs there are in your state, and what programs you have available to edit/print these out in.

I use MS Publisher 2003 for "print layout," or Illustrator depending on my mood, and Photoshop CS2 exclusively for graphics work. Ie: Logos, designs, etc.

Also, I strongly caution against placing the State Seal on your ID cards unless you are CONFIDENT that your ID does not convey official authority. You might, and this is pushing it, have a "State Seal" and place "Licensed by the State of Blah," but in many jurisidictions its illegal. Its also illegal to use the US Coat of Arms (The Eagle) on corporate IDs.

Here in Alaska, a security guard has 30 days from time of hire to apply for a state guard license. Some security firms pay for the license for the guys and then take it out of the employee's bi monthly check. The security guard must have the state license on them any time that they are in uniform.

Are they required to issue their employees a Company identification card? That's what the Sergeant is trying to come up with.

IN Conn, they have to have their state id on them at all times or face a fine. If enough get fines that work for one company, then the company gets fined too.
