Just wanted to know what prison guards have the right to carry.I got my restricted firearms Liscence btw.(and pr-24 too).

I am starting as a prison guard July 16

I dont know if it's like this in the USA but here while on duty you get police officers powers.Correct me if I'm wrong.

As far as I know and seeing as we're in the same provice, I think just cuffs unless doing an escort I.E. Hospital, transport to another facilaty, I have seen them in a hospital sitting outside the room wearing body armor as well as carying an ASP while the inmate is in the room, maybe OC spray as well but I'm not sure (not good to deploy OC in a hospital for some reason) . I wouldnt want to wear a weapon in the facilaty as an inmate could pull it from you when its on your belt.

As far as powers go they are Peace Officers in this province, so very similar to that of a Police Officer only there locked in with the bad guys.

I'm the guy you don't want to be around when your doing something wrong, but you can't wait for me to get there when your down, to fix you up...

I believe there is a high respect level between the two professions, I know that C/O's take part in the peace and police officers memorial day in Ottawa on parade as well. I don't know what a typical day is like for a C/O, some people I know really like their job but still a job where you need to watch your 6 after work.

I went for a tour in one place when I was in Police Foundations, actually ran into a guy I went to highschool with (he was behind the bars) really wasn't suprised he kept living the way he did back then ...

Personally I couldn't see myself working there, I guess the funniest thing that happened on the tour was when one inmate said to us "I'm innocent" my teacher, a retired Toronto copper replied "Ya, you and everyone else in here"

Guess the funniest thing I heard was when a buddy of mine who was a C/O told me about asking the jails nurse about an inmate with HIV/AIDS, and how he could stay safe when around him. The nurse handed him a condom LOL...

I know in CA you have the right to carry anything any other cop can carry. What you will carry depends on what part of the prison you're in.

And yes we are from the same province.
Fact of the matter is that you are wearing the badge and dealing with the same "people" that coppers are dealing with.
so do you get respect from Cops... Yes you do.
I know alot of cops and CO's... and both are walking the same line (just in a different manner) daily.

Corrections is an avenue that i am wanting to explore in the next few years (once I get my knee fixed) and from the CO's that Ive talked to its a great gig. the main thing is (as told to me by an officer with almost 30 years) if you treat the inmates with respect you will get it back. They (even though incarcerated) are still human beings and will treat you with decency as long as you are doing the same for them.

Are you going to be dealing with kids or adults.
Again from what I hear dont deal with the kids. They all want to try to prove something.

            Good luck.

I worked at Pelican Bay Prison in California for 12 1/2 years, then retired. PM me with any questions you may have about the job. We always discribed it as "hours of boredom and minutes of shear panic", lol
