I am a close protection officer and would like to buy myself an under the shirt, NIJ level IIIA vest. I have heard of this material called DYNEMA. It is supposed to stop both bullets and knives. Can anyone confirm this, or is there a better vest out there? Thanks.

Adam1, you can determine if the protective vest provides puncture (knife or spike) protection if it fully meets the H.P. White Laboratory 0400.02 standards or NIJ stab certification 0115.00. Be advised, vests offering only NIJ stab certification 0115.00 offer NO, AS IN NONE, ballistic protection. I might suggest you look at Dragon Skin armor. If you have a LEO friend, get on the net with him, he can enter his LEO code and the both of you can watch the LEO restricted video on their products for police. It'll knock your socks off!

If you are looking for a vest that offers both ballistic and knife protection be prepared to spend ALOT of money. The last time I checked, these vests were crazy expensive. Prices may have come down, but I doubt they have come down too much.

In my opinion, your standard IIIA ballistic vest will still provides some level of resistance to knives. I have heard of people wearing a knife-resistant vest UNDERNEATH a ballistic vest, but that sounds way too uncomfortable... and silly.

If you check out www.bulletproofme.com they carry stab-resistant retrofit plates for a vest. The plates are semi flexible and slide in front of the bullet resistant panels of your vest. They also are said to cut down on the amount of blunt trauma the wearer receives if shot.

Thank you very much. I realized what you said and so have just gone in for a under the shirt, NIJ Level IIIA vest. Its firepower that I am more worried about and less of stabs.

Friday evening at 10:00 pm or 2200 hours, the first segment of Mail Call on the History Channel demonstrated the effectiveness of Dragon Skin armor. The demonstrated a full magazine of Ak-47 ammunition and a full magazine from a 9mm machine gun. All rounds were fired at the same dummy clad with the armor. The one video clip from the law enforcement segment on their website showed a dummy clad with the vest laying atop a fragmentation grenade.
They showed but did not demonstrate knee pad and shin protection to afford protection from the affects of shrapnel.
One can only hope DOD will not drag it feet in its deployment to the troops. The contractor may not be a favored contractor, in other words, not loaded with retired military and congressmen or political contributors.
