Check to see what other officers are wearing at your facility. Of course, some systems don't allow the wearing of vests by staff. I worked 6 years as a Corrections Officer for the State of Louisiana DOC and we were never allowed to wear a vest during normal duties. Exceptions were for members of the Tactical Team who were suited up for just about anything when they needed to be.Hospital Security Officer

You want a vest that resists stabbing and slashing, the two most common inmate weapons. Having said that, be sure that your dept allows the use of under-shirt type vests. Once again, more imortant is that you understand the capabilities of convicted felons and that you keep yourself a safe distance from them. These guys can make you believe that you are well liked just prior to sticking you. DO NOT BECOME FRIENDLY WITH THESE CONVICTS!!! and do not trust them at all.Murphy was an optomist.

Good advice, ask other officers what they wear. I wouldnt listen to those that say, "dont vest up" unless its a dept policy that you cant, then I'd find other employment.
You probably dont need a multi-threat or balistic vest, since your routine has very minimal chance of you catching one..bullet wise.
You need stab/slash protection which is normally designated as "spike level"
Multi-threat vest are un-Godly expensive & very hot as well as normally additionally thick, they tend to bind up more as well..anytime you add protection, you limit mobility & airflow (cooling) and in your case I dont think you need to go that route, but again, ask around, ..be safe!
