  • What Colour Lightbars??

What colour lightbars can be fitted to our cars??

  • #2
Depends where you are! I see you spell colour with a u so you are probably Canadian. Check with your provinces vehcile issuing agency. In Quebec it's the SSAQ. In all of Canada except Ontario red & blue is for police vehicles only. Red & red & white can be used by other emergency vehicles. Yellow is for service vehicles. You require a permit for any lightbar in Quebec, even a yellow one.

In Ontario blue is for snow removal equipment.

Chapter 493, Florida Statutes says that if you put any color other than "amber" on your car, you are impersonating official authority (not a law enforcement officer), and all your licenses are subject to revocation. Oh, and its a misdemeanor criminal offnese, as well.

This is covered in the Class D Security Officer's Handbook.

Amber is pretty much status quo for most areas.

              Hotel Security:
The letter "U" was used in the United States until the dictionary was rewritten by US lexicographer Noah Webster. He broke with the "Kings English" and referred to it as United States American English. All English writing countries other the the US still insert the "U" in their words.
I was given the assignment of writting why the US did not insert the "U" in certain words as a student in the Sheriff's Academy in 1970.

This part is pretty interesting to me.. In Co, for the most part, its amber and white, but if classified as first responder service as well, red. We got the OK to use, red, but thats gonna be whole new bag to deal with, so we are still amber..

Now this is what kills me, One of our malls, located in KS, they have blue. Dont know hwo the law works there, but interesting. Then, when I am shopping through our order catalog for our corporate, they also list green light bars.. Green? I wonder what states use those in the Security sector!

I am from VA and we use green whelen lightbars on our trucks. We also have a full siren system. That is because we are Special Conservators of the Peace, which is the equivalent of a sworn special police officers.

Keep in mind that if you're not governed by 493 in Florida, you can use Amber and White.

On a real weird side note: Doesnt that seem strange to run Green? How do people respond to that?

When I worked in Florida, it was a private thoroughbred horse farm community just between Ocala and Gainesville. The farm manager was told by law enforcement to equip us with blue lights. We were armed to the teeth and made arrests (in a few cases) just as if we were police officers.

Was it simply the fact it was private property and high risk?

The Park Rangers (aka Security) for the Parks system here in East Baton Rouge Parish have green light bars on top of their crown vics. Never seen one lit up. Not sure how the public would respond.

In Quebec green is reserved for fire department command posts. It is not used while the vehicle is in movement. The fire department in Montreal have strict rules re the use of emergency lights. They can be used in vehicles only with an Officer inside. My firend is a fire investigator. They work alone. They used to use there red lights to respond to the fires. They were caught & the red lights were removed from their trucks On the scene of a fire all vehicles near the scene shut off their emergency lights unless necessary for traffic control. The air suppy truck turns on a yellow light, the command post a green & the ambulances & evacuation busses, white. It helps locate things in all the confusion.

There is talk of allowing volunteer fire fighters to use green lights on their personal vehicles as they respond to the station. They won't be allowed to rotate or flash. The will not give the driver any special privileges, just act as a warning.
