  • Greetings from WA (Australia, not Washington!)

    Hi all,

Thought I'd introduce myself, rather than lurk forever I'm as rookie as you can get - haven't even started! I'm a full-time uni student in Western Australia. I'm just about to finish a Certificate II in Security Operations (the prereq. for a SO license here in WA), and hoping to pick up some part-time work as a Crowd Controller.

I'm not the strongest/biggest guy, but I've worked with a lot of CCs at events I've organised and help manage, and find the work really interesting and enjoyable (esp. picking up skills like de-escalation and managing aggression).

These forums have been a great resource in convincing me to join the industry, so I'm looking forward to participating - wish me luck in getting a job!

G'day Perthy - from Sydney here and lived in Perth for 6 months many moons ago for work. Wellinngton Surplus is the best place in the world in WA and next to the Old WA Salvage were 2 places I drooled over.

A Cert II equivalent in my old days was 20 multiple questions in a test over 2 days of lectures. Do you want to get into CC work or just want to get into Security Work ? I would avoid Northbridge like the plague as some bad dudes work around their and trouble follows.

Anyway ............. enjoy yourself and good to see more of us Aussies finally taking over.

Not sure if you're trying to say that WA Salvage was your second-favourite place to shop, but they've closed down! I love wellington surplus. I imagine a lot of the security-related equipment (eg. handcuffs) require a special endorsement on a license? Just curious.

The Cert II has changed from 10 days of full-time training to a 'flexible learning' course where you study from home and come in for a one-day workshop on legislation. Correspondence has its place (hell, I did a lot of my schooling via distance ed while travelling!) but it strikes me as quite ridiculous to be so short, to be honest. I definitely want to pick up more skills - so that might be in terms of more courses or just on the job. To be honest, I was most attracted to the job by the Crowd Control work, so that's probably where I want to be.

So I've heard! I don't *particularly* fancy working clubs - my ideal job would be working more relaxed pubs or events, but wherever I end up, I'm staying out of Northbridge to even go out (let alone work!)

Anyway ............. enjoy yourself and good to see more of us Aussies finally taking over.

Yeah I know they closed down .................... I got told that Bunnings bought them out or something like that. I guess I won't be able to "Sava Da Money" anymore !!

We have just had a major shaked up on licencing in NSW and it is well overdue too. When I was in WA for work - I got to be come mates with East Perth Lockup since my firearms were stored there and I would have to retrieve them every time I had to use them for work.

I bought alot of duty rigs from Wellington and even got my Uncle Mikes Holster from them on a past trip (not used much now). I have been known to have bought boots from them and worn them straight out of the box to the airport and back on the plane that night ............. alot cheaper than NSW - oh security officers get 10% off too by showing your licence.

As I said - this is a wonderful forum with some legendary people who will discuss all different topics around the globe. You will learn so much and you will also learn more about the Aussie side of things too.

              Hello Perthy

              Glad to have you aboard.

Hey, incase no one has told you, you don't have to be all that big and bad to make it in the security field. A smart person is much more important then bulging muscles. Having taking classes on de-escalating upset persons, and such, you are ahead of the game already in dealing with just one person, or a crowd.

In this job, experience is a great teacher, but so is watching your fellow co-workers on how they handle situations. Follow the ways of those you believe do it well , and avoid the idiots out there who will lead you down a bad path.

And above all, try to have fun, and enjoy your job.

Hell 1984 I was only 15 and had been only shaving for a year ............. yeah Perth is untouched place - so untouched that my first trip there I wondered why there was nothing open at night and why the shops shut at 1600 on a Saturday arvo - only to expect them to be Open on Sunday. I know the Daylight Saving time is making not many people happy right now ............

Add on Sunday trading and bob's your uncle ...............
