Background: I serve with several public agencies. I'm a F/T security specialist responsible for two very large municipal watersheds. I serve P/T as a detective/arson investigator. I'm a very P/T (sub) armed school district patrol officer. I'm a combat veteran and continue to serve in law enforcement/intelligence in the state guard.

Cool. A fellow State Guardsman. I joined the La SG after getting my honarable discharge. I hold the rank of Staff Sgt/E-6. Unfortunatly La doesn't really have any mission for it's State Guard outside of paid positions such as cadre working alongside National Guard at Youth Challenge and some MP postions at select bases. Volunteers like myself have no drills, don't get called for emergencies and don't have regular contact with anyone from the Military Department. I'm currently inactive and have been for about 5 years. Until this year I had been a member of the State Guard Association of the US but have let my membership lapse.

I wonder how many people know the difference between a state's National Guard, and their State Guard.

Except for Texas, who holds regular drill, I have never heard of a state guard who is actively used, they rely mostly on the National Guard.

I'd be curious, if you'd care to share/explain... we only have regulars & reserves (military), I'm not familiar with the concept of the State Guard, though at a guess I figure the 'National Guard' may be the equivalent of our reserve forces

THREAD STEAL AHEAD- Was Gonna PM but thought I'd post for all to see.

The State called up a couple hundred State Guard members for Katrina but they were not the volunteer cadre you normally think of. They were the fulltime and part time paid state employes who are in uniform nearly everyday of the week performing jobs for the Military Department. Also, every civilian employee of the State OEP/EOC is listed as a member of the State Guard. When an emergency is declared all of those employees fall under the state Military Department which is in charge of the EOC. Applications for jobs with the Military Department and the State OEP both include sections on a employee being sworn into the State Guard if they are hired for those agencies. These are the LaSG members refrered to when I saw tht a couple hundred were called to assist the National Guard. As far as I was able to see, no volunteer members of the LaSG were called. A few used to get together for drills every 3 or 4 months but after Katrina destroyed Jackson Barricks in New Orleans I havn't heard of them meeting since. Unlike most other States with SDFs/State Guards there is no website for the LaSG and I only learned about it after I saw a newspaper article stating that Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee is a Commander of the LaSG. I sent him a letter with my resume' and he got me in touch with the person in charge of recruiting at the time (1997 I think). I'm curious which State Guard the OP is in.

Yes I still have my EMT job at the steel mill. I can't say I am working since what I do can hardly be described as work. I sit at the desk answering phones and waiting for someone to call for a medical complaint. I can go a couple of days with nothing more than redressing bandages on the same guy I see everyday for a burn he got 2 weeks prior. Then I get a dude who dropped a steel block on his foot. (Ice and elevate and consult with the Doctor. Hopefully it doesn't appear broken and he can chill in his department until the end of his shift.)
Next week I'm spending 2 days at the plant in an EMT refresher class. Depending on the person I am partnered up with I do little or no actual Security stuff. I have one old fart who thinks that everytime I go on patrol or lock up a building I'm trying to put him out of a job. "I'm the security officer here, you're an EMT and here for medical. I lock the buildings and I do the patrols!" ok dood....backs away slowly. Other officers split everything with me right down the middle. I do every other patrol and either one of us can take care of buildings and parking lots. The badge on my uniform and state ID card in my wallet say Security Officer afterall. It just depends on who I'm partnered up with.

National Guard are military who fall under the control of states govenors and may be used by them in a State wide emergency. They also have a federal role in that they canbe activated by the President and "federalized" for service either withing the US or outside it's borders such as in Iraq. When activated by the state the govenor has to find the money to pay their salaries. When federalized the pentagon picks up the tab.
The State Guard, also know as State Defense Forces, are stictly state forces under the control of the govenor through the state military department. While some may have paid postions such as here in Louisiana, in many states the vast majority are made up of volunteers who drill on their weekends off and pay for most if not all of their equiptment including uniforms. They are the recognized milita and are not to be mistaken for the rouge militia groups who sprang up around the time of the Branch Davidian Compound standoff.
A good place to start is the State Guard Association of the US - http://www.sgaus.org/ . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Defense_Forces will also give you a good overview.
