Most WalMarts have top notch ptz's and digital security systems. They have a strict policy of hands off ,but usually your managers "overlooked" alot just to save the store merchandise. The associates and moreso the managers all get quarterly bonuses that are reflected and calculated by store shrink and losses. Trust me when I say the Store manager and assistant store managers will overlook alot to get that big bonus at the end of the year. Not only is WalMart money driven from the CEO's but it also runs in the managemnet inside the stores.

When I was at Walmart from around 2003, our managers were extremely "asset" driven. We didn't have an LP team, our store was "too small" to rate one. Which meant it was the assistant manager and whoever they could find.

I don't know if the hands-off policy is new, but back then, it didn't exist. The assistant managers had no problem with my philosophy: If you actively resist, you go straight to the ground.

Not true. I interviewed for a AP position recently. I asked about it and was told they is no such thing as a hands off policy. Make the stop as safely as you can but make the stop.

You have to walk a fine line in NC on physically reatsrainting because if they hire a lawyer ,you are going to have a bad time because you could be accused of arresting them ie holding against their will. My friend that works LP at Wal-Mart told me yesterday that they don't have an official hands off policy ,I was incorrect , but anytime you grab someone you are looking at a lawsuit. To me a shoplifter is a thief and should be stopped by any means.

How do you apply with them? I can't find anything on the website about lp. Any idea of what the pay and benefits are like? Thanks for all the reply so far.

Go to walmart.com scroll to the bottom of the page. Middle section (about walmart stores) click carrers at walmart. Next page click apply for a carrer. next page look for "your local area" center page ,click walmart. Now you are in the hiring center ,click apply now and i agree through the next couple of pages. Click create login ,keep this handy for later use. Once you are logged on you will answer some ethnical questions, you will get to the "areas of interest" screen click walmart. next screen will be the "facility locator screen ,self explanitory. On the next screen you will click the stores of your choosing. Now the next screen is where you want to be ,it is the "Choose the type of position that you are interested in" screen. The fourth option down is "
    "Office and Loss Prevention
This group includes hourly support positions, such as Personnel, Training, Accounting and Loss Prevention"

Thats your screen ,the rest is up to you my friend.

P.S. They have an assesment that you take after completing your application ,BE SURE to take that and finish it. Your application will not post to the selected stores until you complete and pass the aassesment. It is like 60 plus questions and they are to judge your personality and truthfullness.

You might not be able to apply on the website, you might have to go to the in-store kiosk, or even actually talk with a manager. If you can't find it anywhere just give them a call and ask for the "asset protection coordinator" and if he/she isn't available, the store manager, they would at least be able to tell you if they are looking for someone and how they would want you to apply.

edit: nvm stangtattoo pretty much wrote you a guide

You can apply for LP online ,you can apply for any position. Managers and hourly associates do not get the same benefits either ,other than insurance. Associates get a quarterly bonus ,usually around 400 dollars depending on the shrink ,store losses etc. Managers get their bonus at the end of the year and can total 10,000$ or more.

Don't believe Google my friend lol.

The vast majority of my LP experience comes from working at Walmart, and I absolutely loved it.

There is no hands-off policy in effect. You're expected to go hands on. There's also no pursuit policy at all, so you do what you feel comfortable doing. Additionally, you're allowed to use handcuffs (even in Canada, where private contract security cannot).

Their LP position is technically a management position, and your job extends to general health and safety, as well as security. You're responsible for holding loss prevention seminars to all new Walmart employees, as well.

The location I worked at, and later the location I set up (new store), both had cutting edge surveillance gear. Great stuff. And the Greeters (at the doors) were wonderfully helpful.

Also, the official job title is In-Store Loss Prevention (ISLP) Officer. Each manager does not have it's own ISLP Manager, so you and your teammates work under a District Loss Prevention Manager (DLPM), who manages an entire district of multiple stores. S/he's also responsible for the majority of internal theft investigations.

It's a good company to work for over all. No hands-off policy. If you have your 4 elements, make the stop, within reason anyway.. I'm not sure if the pay is good or bad since it's the only LP i've worked before. For the hourly APA or asset protection associate, the pay is based on the same pay scale for all hourly's. APA is a level seven, the highest hourly pay in the store except for the zone merchandice supervisors, which are on a slightly different scale since they are new. At my store the base (level 1) pay is $7.50 and for each level you add a certain ammount. You can also add up to 5 experience credits for years in the field. You will not start higher than $11.10 per hour if the base pay is $7.50.
For the salaried APC, or Asset protection coordinator, your base pay depends on the area your store is in. Every store has either a "metro" or "non-metro" designation. If you are an APC in a non-metro store, the base pay is $30,000 even. In a metro store, the base pay is $33,750. If you are in a really high volume store that consistantly makes your sales and profit goals, you could make up to a 20% bonus, but that is rare. Usually they get less.
The MAPM or Market Asset Protection Manager is the same pay grade as a store co-manager, which is $60,000 or $65,000 depending on if you are metro or not.
The benefits are exactly the same for the hourly cart pusher or the regional manager. If you want good ones, you pay more from your check. If you just want to be a statistic and be able to say you have health insurance, you can probably get by for less than $10 a check and have some really crappy coverage.
    Hope that helped.
