We had this issue really bad at one of the sites I worked. It's really difficult to combat. We had spiders continuously building webs outside our primary PTZ camera which covered the front gate. The maintenance guys would go and tear the web down and by the next shift it was back up.
I found it is really bad when the camera is next to a light. This was the only camera next to a light and was the only one that got webs on it. I assume its because 1. It's warmer and 2. The bugs that hover the light get caught in the web. The camera was already hardwired into the building so there was really no fixing it at that time."Alright guys listen up, ya'll have probably heard this before, Jackson vs. Securiplex corporation; I am a private security officer, I have no State or governmental authority. I stand as an ordinary citizen. I have no right to; detain, interrogate or otherwise interfere with your personal property-... basically all that means is I'm a cop."-Officer Ernie

You may want to look into a Residual surface insect spray, speak to a pest control specialist as there are some very good products that may only need to be reapplied a couple of times a year, the off the shelf stuff is a waste of time on external cameras. If its maintained its probably the least costly remedy.
You can also look at a non-contact wiper and washer assembly they use a washer solution or compressed air to clean the dome or housing. (but of course there is a cost involved).Wiper assemblies are not too affective for spider webs as they smear them onto the glass. The difference between ordeal and adventure is Attitude.

If the smell won't bother anyone, mothballs. I've used them to keep ants out of gate control equipment, photo beams, etc. I think it will work for spiders too. As a matter of fact, that reminds me. I saw some ants on the downspout. Time to throw a couple in the rain gutter.

BTW, don't they look cool, and huge, when they're crawling on the front of your housing? Gives me the willies sometimes though.

Ha! Funny thing. I had a tech go out today to add some IR illuminators on a customers cameras, and she called and said the junction box for 2 cameras at the top of the tree trunk (residential install, not covert, but blended) was full of ants. Guess we need some mothballs. Now where'd I put those tweezers?

Spiderex Spider Deterrent for CCTV
Spiderex is a specially formulated clear spray which when applied to any area will deter spiders for up to 8 months. This is a revolutionary new product that has been developed specifically for the security industry.
Spiders like creating their webs in warm places, which, unfortunately for security installers includes around CCTV camera housings and PIR detectors. This in effect causes false alarms with PIR detectors or build up of material in front of a CCTV camera. In any case, maintenance is required to resolve these issues.
Too much time has been spent by installers getting rid of spiders and the issues they cause for security systems. Spiderex is a simple product yet having a can will provide a massive impact on the time spent on maintenance and profits of a security installer, In fact, even if Spiderex was to stop one service call it would have paid for itself many times over.
This will solve one of the biggest causes of false alarms in CCTV systems and also stop the build-up of spider related material such as webs in CCVTV cameras and housings.
Spiderex is on Special Offer now at £5 OFF per tin + FREE Delivery and available from www.spiderex.co.uk
