Firefighters? So surprised I dropped my double-cheeseburger. Thankfully it landed in my fries, not my chocolate shake.

(...a scowling woman looking much like Michelle Obama approaches. Metal claws emerge from her forehead. WHOOSH! She's gone, leaving ST with 2 carrot sticks and a thimble of cole slaw. From somewhere comes a horrible gurgling laugh...and the sound of chewing...)

Firefighters don't surprise me. I mean they get paid to watch movies, wash their engine, cook, and eat. I should be a firefighter

I would like ro be a firefighter, but I'm no good with ladders. They must need ground people, right?

It's kinda like how I'd join the Coast Guard and be the "land guy". The guy on the dock that releases the mooring lines and waves while the ship sails away; I wonder if that's a specific job I can apply for?

They are always needing extra hose draggers. That is their main job anyways, you might as well be the hose dragging specialist.

This is a good one for safety and wellness...If you don't have a very active job where you are constantly on your feet, eat right and make time to move. Just sitting there isn't good for you...There are even exercises you can do at your desk. It's not the job that makes people fat, it's the people who are happy being sedentary.

Also, think of it this way, you may have gone a billion shifts without anything happening, so you just sit back and chill and nature does it's thing...One day, boom, s***t touches off and you're going full-bore...What do you think that does to your heart? Firefighters are a great example, I've read stories of firefighters having fatal heart attacks when the alarm goes off and wakes them up in the middle of the night. Some, ofcourse, had underlying health issues unrelated to being sedentary...But it goes to show you, stay in shape, bodies--hearts especially--aren't men to go from -0 to Mach 3 just like that.

Take good care of yourselves people!

                Stay Safe.

The EMS area seems to be more so in this situation. Though not having to run into buildings on fire, apprehending suspects it seems as long as you can apply the EMS/Para skills in the field, push and pull a gurney it's okay. I mean seriously I have seen some EMS/Paras that look like heart attacks waiting to happen!? :/

                    Weight control

okay... So I'll bite (pun intended)

Iv been at this job for about 8 years now. I walk about 9-10 sometimes as many as 11 miles a night. (yes walk - a few occasions Iv tracked myself)

In the 8 years, Iv gained weight. Although I walk nearly 10 miles a night, It isn't strenuous anymore. Although at the end of my shift, Im tired.....its just tiredness of being awake and moving for the long period of time.

                    all jokes aside.

                    any Ideas for me?

                    I sleep 8a-2 or 3p or maybe 4p
get ready for work at 7p
out of the house for 8p
                    clock in at 9p
                    clock out at 7a

Sorry to resurrect an older thread..
Well for one you are getting older and that tends to put weight on people. Also how is your carb intake? I'm not talking about going full on atkins but if you cut your carb intake in half and replace the other bad carbs like chips with good carbs like vegetables you will lose weight guaranteed. Before I found this out I was gaining about 1.5lbs a year no matter how much exercise i got due to getting closer to 30 years old. Now I'm down to my high school weight with pretty much normal blood pressure(it was getting high).
